How should we vote knowing that humanity only has 12 years to stem catastrophic climate change, according to the latest IPCC report?

If passed, I-1631 would impose a carbon pollution fee on coal, gas and oil, and use the revenues to invest in climate, clean energy and environmental projects. The initiative is not perfect. It is long, complicated and pockmarked with compromises—but it will do a lot more good than harm.

We simply do not have time to wait for enlightened politicians to lead our way out of climate crisis. We also cannot wait for others to come up with that perfect initiative. We must act now and not lose sight of the forest for the trees.

If Washington passes I-1631 it will be the most ambitious carbon price in the United States — still well below the social price of carbon, but a step in the right direction. With Washington, D.C. AWOL on climate change, Washington state will set an example for other states to follow.

What is at stake here is the choice between gasoline that is a little more expensive versus a sure path to climate destruction: a world full of risks and worsening natural disasters for our children and grandchildren.

Let’s give the future generations a chance. Please vote in support of I-1631.
