Lopez Island voters renewed the school district’s property tax levy for maintenance and operations on Tuesday.

More than 75 percent endorsed the renewal; the vote was 562 in favor, 182 opposed. In 2011, the property tax levy will produce about $942,000 in revenue.

“We are thrilled,” Superintendent and Elementary School Principal Linda Martin said, adding that if the levy had not been renewed, the effects would have been “devastating” to the school. “So we are very relieved. It’s great to live in such a supportive community.”

There was also success at the polls on San Juan. Levies for the San Juan Island School District and San Juan Emergency Medical Services were approved. The former passed with a 69 percent majority and will produce about $2.3 million in 2011. The latter took a 76 percent majority and will produce about $1.25 million in 2011.

On Orcas Island, however, only one of two ballot items were approved. The first, a renewal of Orcas Island School District’s maintenance and operations levy, was approved with more than 67 percent of the vote. This will produce an estimated $1.7 million for the district in 2011.

The second issue, a $35 million general obligation bond to fund the construction of a middle school and several other capital projects, required a 60 percent majority for approval. However, it only drew 55 percent.
