To celebrate Lopez history and being able to play together again, the Lopez History Museum is hosting three fun afternoons for children this summer outside on the Museum grounds.

The first, on Saturday, June 19, will feature old-fashioned games, including gunny sack races, foot races and egg-in-a-spoon races, a scavenger hunt and a chicken race (volunteer chickens needed!) The free afternoon event will run from 1-3 p.m. It is modeled on the games that Lopez children once played at Odlin Park after the Fourth of July Parade.

Children 4-12 are invited to attend but must be accompanied by an adult. Older kids can help with the games if they want to participate. Prizes will be awarded to all. We still need to follow county Covid protocols. Adults and kids must wear masks because of the likelihood that we’ll get closer than 6-feet apart.

The second kid’s day will be July 10 and will feature island wool and fiber crafts including carding, spinning, weaving, felting and a small petting zoo. It will run from 3-5 p.m. on the museum grounds.

Plans for the last summer event on Aug. 7 are still being finalized but could include Native American storytelling and crafts.

All events are free and include free admission to the Museum for families that afternoon.
