There will be a community screening of the independent documentary “The Real Dirt on Farmer John” on Saturday, June 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lopez Community Center. Farmer John Peterson’s inspirational story of revolutionizing his family farm and redeeming his won life has won accolades and awards around the world. Sponsored by Lopez Center. Suggested donation $5. Children free.
Greeting of the whales benefit
Each summer, the resident pods of orca whales come together in what are called “greeting ceremonies.” Mimicking that rousing social event, The Whale Museum is inviting supporters of these magnificent creatures to come together at The Whale Museum’s second annual “Greeting Ceremony” Fundraising Dinner and Auction on Saturday, June 14.
The event will be held at Mullis Center with a happy hour and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Musician Keith Busha will provide live entertainment. Noted chef Farhad Ghatan is preparing the gourmet dinner to be served at 6:30 p.m. Jenny Atkinson, executive director of the museum, will serve up her “Little Killer Cakes” for dessert. After dinner, auctioneer Eugene Cuomo will emcee a live auction.
Tickets are $50 per person for members of The Whale Museum and $65 for non-members and can be purchased at The Whale Museum. To reserve tickets, call the museum at 378-4710 ext. 30.
Botany of Mt. Constitution
A San Juan Nature Institute adult field workshop with Dr. Thor Hanson that explores site ecology and plant identification at various elevations will occur on Saturday, June 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will meet at Moran State Park’s Cascade Lake parking area.
