Golf is coming back full swing at Lopez Island High School. Like many other sports, Lopez was unable to carry out a regular golf season in 2020 and 2021.

“After two years of no competition, we’re rebuilding the team,” said coach Richard Tetu. “We have a few returning players, some of them did play during the pandemic just with local folks.”

The team currently has 10 women and 13 men. There is only one senior on the team this year. The group is young overall and has a diverse range of experience levels.

The Lopez Island Golf Course is also providing free workshops for any school-aged locals. They take place at noon on Friday and 8:30 on Saturdays. Those who work for the course help to raise funds for students, allowing them to play for $50 for a full year.

“We get phenomenal support from the local golf course,” Tetu said. “It’s incredible. They really welcome the kids with open arms.”

He recounted a time where he was in need of a golf club for a left handed female player on the team. Within 24 hours the course had brought him two left handed sand wedges for the player.

“Any kind of equipment we need, members ALWAYS come through,” he said enthusiastically. “We would not have the success we’ve had if it wasn’t for those people.”

With the support from the Lopez community and players who are excited to get back into the game after a two year pandemic hiatus, Tetu is optimistic about what this season has to offer.

The first match is March 22 against Orcas.
