Lopez Grange hosts traditional maypole dance and celebration

Lopez Island Grange will host a traditional Maypole Dance & Celebration on Sunday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. The event will be held “rain or shine” out on the Grange lawn, with music provided by Rattlesnail Stringband from Seattle and Lopez. All ages are invited and encouraged to participate, no prior experience necessary. Chairs will be provided for those who want to attend but would like to watch.

The Maypole is an ancient and ceremonial dance that spans many regions and cultures, typically performed on May Day (May 1) around a tall pole adorned with flowers and colorful ribbons. The ribbons are woven in a colorful pattern around the pole by the dancers as a celebration of Spring and fertility for the season to come.

The Grange board and membership are excited to host this years Maypole event and are grateful for the ongoing support of the island community. The event is free, with sweet treats from Holly B’s available by donation. All donations will be added to the Grange’s building and maintenance fund.
