Vote Hughes | Letter

I’ve lived through many campaigns, and I know the commitment and hard work that is required when someone runs for office. I have a lot of respect for Rick Hughes and Justin Paulsen who have spent the last many months campaigning so that they can represent us Orcasonians on our County Council.

I am writing this letter in support of Rick’s candidacy, and here are three major reasons why I’m voting for him:

1) He served in the position of San Juan County Council Member for eight years, from 2012-2020. What an incredible thing that Rick wants to serve our community again in this capacity. During the four years since he last served, Rick has had time to reflect on what he accomplished and what still needs to be done. He has valuable experience that he will continue to build on.

I am impressed with what was accomplished when Rick was on the Council: the building of the Orcas Exchange; the origination of Lopez Solid Waste District; increased support of the arts and diversity; establishment of a good relationship with the Land Bank … to name a few.

2) Rick has good working relationships with state and regional officials, which he has continued to foster during these last four years. He has many endorsements for this election, e.g., Planned Parenthood, Public Lands Commissioner and Washington Conservation Action. His invaluable network of contacts is one that he can connect with on day one of his re-election to the Council.

3) Rick has become a really good listener. He told me that it was important to him to sit down with as many people as he could to listen to what their concerns are, and that’s what he has been doing these last several months. For example, he met with Mark and me for more than an hour one morning. I trust that he will continue to listen to all of our concerns when in office.

Here are a few other comments that mirror my opinion about Rick’s candidacy:

“Rick is the only candidate to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood …. He is interested in the issues of women. He is a critical and forward thinker, and he understands the issues that our County faces …. He has earned the right to serve us again, and I will vote to return him to the Council.” — Michell “Mitch” Marshall

“I have known Rick Hughes for half a century, but even people who’ve known him for half an hour will probably have heard these four words: ‘How can I help?’ Rick’s first instinct is always to do what he can for others. That basic compassion makes him an excellent friend, but it’s also a great foundation for public service, ensuring policy decisions that are people-focused and grounded in the needs of the community.” — Thor Hanson

“As someone in my 20s, I am deeply invested in our county’s environmental future, resource management, and affordable housing for my generation. Rick Hughes has a proven track record of dedicated service to our community and a clear vision for addressing these critical issues. His efforts to tackle affordable housing in San Juan County demonstrate his commitment to making our community more accessible and sustainable for young people and future generations.” —Matthew Laslo
