Lopez Earth Month – Celebrating Earth Day all April

April 1: Gathering of the Eagles benefit dinner

Enjoy delicious seafood and chowder dinner at Gathering of the Eagles benefit dinner and art auction from 5-8 p.m., LCCA. Proceeds to benefit the fifth annual GOTE Canoe Journey, which will land at Spencer Spit on May 17-18.

April 10: Moving the needle – Don’t trash it, fix it!

Friends of Invisible Mending partners with Transition Lopez Island to help you with your mending challenges, giving old clothes new life and keeping them out of the landfill. Free class; donations gratefully accepted. All proceeds to benefit displaced families in Gaza. Grace Church, 5-7 p.m.

April 10: “Story Story Story!”

“Story Story Story!” is a storytelling event series on Lopez Island at the Grange. In honor of Earth Day, April’s theme will be “Adventure.” Tell us about an outdoor (mis)adventure, a time you felt connected to nature or a wild place or an exciting interaction with the earth, a time you marveled at a natural wonder. The Grange, 7 p.m.

April 12: Great Islands Clean-up

Join fellow Lopezians and SWAP to clean up our shared beaches and roadways! Village Park & Lopez Island, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Once in the spring and once in the fall, San Juan County organizes community clean-ups on Lopez, Orcas, Shaw and San Juan. Check in and pick a route at Lopez Village Park from 10-11 a.m. Contact: Sarah Reeves.

April 12: Labyrinth walk

Whispers of Nature created a seven-circuit, outdoor labyrinth surrounded by a medicinal herb and flower garden to share with you. The labyrinth is open for walking as a healing space with full intentions of consciousness and pure love. Donations are welcome. Whisper of Nature Labyrinth, 2-6 p.m.

April 18: Free screening of “Out There – A National Park Story”

Embarking on a 10,000-mile journey, two friends explore America’s national parks, capturing stories of those who cherish and preserve these natural wonders. Brought to you by Friday Harbor Film Festival and Earth Day Orcas Month. Lopez Library, 7-9 p.m.

April 19: Procession of the Species mask and prop workshop

Join guest artist Brook Meinhardt in using recycled materials to bring your favorite species to life in this DIY mask/prop workshop! Use materials provided or bring your own. Sponsored by the San Juan Islands Makers Guild. Lopez Library Craft Corner, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

April 20: Hummel Lake work party

“Work Party” with Kwiaht at the fishing access ramp beginning at 1:30 pm. Planting native shrubs, fishing (including instruction for young beginners), briefing on progress in restoring native habitat and water quality, sharing stories about SJC’s only intact “glacial-kettle” lake. Corner of Center Road and Hummel Lake Road, 1:30 p.m.

April 21: Procession of the Species costume-making workshop

Come and participate in helping bring your vision of a more-than-human species to life through costuming and mask making! Bring your ideas. Free! Hosted by Nikyta Palmisani, Lopez Library. Lopez Library Craft Corner, 4-6 p.m.

April 21: Climate COMPASS – Interactive community conversation

Join us in a hands-on, interactive climate exercise designed to educate, engage and empower the community in shaping local climate policies. A project of Madrona Institute and Friends of the San Juans. Lopez Library Meeting Room, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

April 22: Be Here Now Gardening

Transition Lopez Island offers silent sunrise meditation for one half hour in the garden at Chickadee Homestead, followed by a potluck breakfast. Feel free to stay for a morning of springtime fun helping out in the orchard. 203 Chickadee Lane, 7 a.m.

April 22: Earth Day Birds and Blooms hike

Celebrate Earth Day wandering the rugged bluffs of Iceberg Point with birding leader Beth St. George and Land Bank steward Amanda Wedow. Meet at Agate Beach parking lot. Sponsored by SJI National Monument, Lopez Library and SJC Conservation Land Bank. Iceberg Point, 9-11 a.m.

April 22: Procession of the Species

Procession of the species is back! Come as you are or come representing your favorite species.

Meet in the Village at the Farmers Market. In collaboration with Youth Conservation Corps. Art by Claire Waterman. Contact: Andrew Munson. Farmer Market Ground, 5 p.m.

April 23: Wheels on the Bus: Exploring Public Transit

Field trip with Ron Metcalf of Transition Lopez Island – learning how to leave your car behind and make good use of Skagit Transit. Tour the Skagit Valley Co-op in Mt. Vernon and return to Anacortes for lunch. Meet at 8:50 a.m. at the Lopez ferry. Return on the 4:15 p.m. ferry.
