A New Year’s Concert:
Chamber Music 1800
Brighten the New Year with a special period-instrument performance of chamber music from around 1800 by colleagues of Mozart and Haydn with cellist Martin Bonham (Victoria, B.C.), oboist Sand Dalton and violinist Celia Rosenberger (both from Lopez Island), violinist and violist Stephen Creswell (Seattle) and flutist Jeffrey Cohan on Sunday, January 4 at 4:00 PM at Grace Church at 70 Sunset Lane (just north of Lopez Village).
2009 Winter “Food” Film Series
What to do on a dark winter late afternoon? Come munch organic popcorn while viewing a community screening of two independently produced documentaries that provide a strong and relevant voice about sustainability issues close to our home.

In this film you will meet Dan Jason, the man behind the heirloom and heritage seed catalog Salt Spring Seeds. He is also the head of the grassroots organization called the Seed and Plant Sanctuary for Canada, a network of gardeners working to preserve as much plant diversity as possible. Labryinth Walk
Everyone is welcome to attend an evening of peaceful reflection, receiving calmness, and tranquility during the New Year’s Eve Labyrinth Walk. The event is presented by the Emmanuel Episcopal Parish Church from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
New Year’s Eve Ball
“Let’s Dance” is the theme of the annual New Year’s Eve ball, sponsored by Orcas Dance Club and to be held in Orcas Center’s Madrona Room. The public is invited; tickets are $40 and may be purchased at Kay’s Antiques, Eastsound. Music will be provided by the Steve Alboucq band. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. The music starts at 9. Hors d’oeuvres will be available and champagne will be served at midnight.

Orcas Island Camera Club Monthly Meeting.
The Camera Club will meet in the Lundeen Room of the Senior Center starting at 7 p.m. If you received a new camera for Christmas, now’s the time to meet other photographers on the island and learn all about photography. Welcome the new year with a viewing of members’ photos of the holiday season and see a video interview with Sam Abell, former photo editor at National Geographic. Poetry Class Instructor JoEllen Moldoff will be presenting “Three Tuesdays of Poetry – for Poets, Poetry Lovers, and the Curious” January 6, 13, and 20 from 1-3 p.m. at the Orcas Library. In this brief session, the class will read aloud and discuss the work of contemporary American and international poets, poems that will inspire and awaken the poet in you. Participants will consider the poem’s content and context, form, sound, tone, word choice, lyricism, meaning. Register at the Orcas Library. There is a $7 fee for library and copying costs.
