Sea Kayaking Intro 1: 7:30 – 9 p.m., Family Resource Center. Ages: 15-Adult (ages 13 and 14 possible with instructor approval). This three day session will teach skills and increase confidence in paddling the San Juans. There will be practice time on travel skills such as launching, passage plans, paddle signals, landing, and wet exits. Forward and reverse strokes, draw strokes, sweep strokes, bracing and assisted and unassisted capsize recoveries for both single and double kayaks. Hallmarks are safety, fun and learning through discussion, demonstration, and practicing with lots of individual attention. Bring your own boat, paddle, paddle float and bilge pump. Meeting: 7 p.m., Lopez Library Meeting Room. Lilian Vega Ortiz, of the Guatemalan Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), will talk about how AVP serves as a peaceful response to violence. Ortiz has worked with Friends Peace Teams’ Peacebuilding in the Americas initiative in Central America and is traveling throughout the U.S. this summer. Opening Reception for the Lopez Artist Guild: 5 – 7 p.m. Lopez Center on Friday. The show features pastel paintings by Steve Hill; pastel and oil paintings by Amanda Houston; and metal sculpture by Ron Norman. Refreshments will be served and artists will be present. The show runs through Aug. 10.

Independence Day concert: 2 p.m., the lawn at Edenwild Inn. Funds raised go toward the Lopez School Music Advocacy Foundation’s programs designed to enrich Lopez students’ educational experiences through musical presentations and workshops. Tickets are $15 with free entry for students.
