The 13th Annual Lopez Island Garden Club’s highly anticipated Plant Sale is happening on Thursday, May 8, from 10 a.m. till noon at Woodmen Hall on Fisherman Bay Road. Eager Lopez gardeners often line up early to have first shot at selecting many wonderful and sometimes unique plants that other gardeners from all over the island have donated. The selection of plants includes trees, shrubs perennials, ground covers, veggie and berry starts and a variety of native species.
This special event will also include the popular and successful Silent Auction. Be sure to get there early as the auction will close promptly at 11 a.m. Shoppers can make bids on a fabulous assortment of plants and gift certificates donated by local businesses and nurseries, including Azusa Farm and Gardens, Christianson’s Nursery, Lopez Village Market, Pelindaba Lavender Farm, Mitchell Bay Farm, Skagit Gardens, Sunset Builder’s Nursery, Sweetbriar Farm, T & D Farms, The Market in Anacortes, and Wells Nursery, as well as other individuals and businesses. In addition to plants for sale, there will be a used Garden Books section which was very popular last year.
Funds raised by the Plant Sale are used by the Garden Club to finance their yearly scholarship awarded to a graduating Lopez High School senior and to award stipends to guest speakers who give presentations at the Garden Club meetings. Members of the Garden Club meet monthly, September through June, on the 2nd Thursday of the month at Woodmen Hall, from 9:30 till noon. Every other year the Garden Club also sponsors the Lopez Island Garden Tour which is a real treat for everyone to see what is possible to grow on this rock of ours. The next tour will be in 2015. Grab your gardening gloves and tools and get ready for this year’s Plant Sale on May 8. Donate any plants you are thinning out or would like to share. Donations can be dropped off at Woodmen Hall on Wednesday, May 7, from 3-5 p.m.
