San Juan County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to these calls:
May 26: A Lopez Island home belonging to a Seattle man was ransacked sometime during his recent two-month absence from the Watmough Head Road residence. The 45-year-old last had been at the home in late March. Upon his return, he reportedly found its windows and screens broken and torn, artwork and appliances tossed outside, clothing scattered throughout its interior, and that a stockpile of food and supplies had been consumed.
– A Kirkland couple escaped a rough landing without injury after a brake pedal failed during a mid-afternoon touchdown at the Roche Harbor Resort airstrip. Failure of the left brake pedal caused the small two-seater, a 1994 KIS, piloted by the husband, 47, to lurch to the right and veer into a fence on the airstrip’s south side before it came to a stop.
– A San Juan Island woman accused of throwing knives at a roommate during an early evening dispute at their Park Street home was arrested for assault. The 26-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 8 p.m. was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, at the time of the arrest.
May 27: A San Juan Island woman who allegedly slapped her boyfriend on the face and scratched his neck was arrested following a late-night altercation at their Pear Point Road home. The 33-year-old, who was taken into custody short before 9 p.m., faces one count of misdemeanor assault.
– A pair of warrants issued in Island County prompted the arrest of a San Juan Island man following an early morning traffic stop in Friday Harbor. The 33-year-old, who was pulled over near the intersection of First and Court Streets at about 7:30 a.m., allegedly violated court orders related to prior convictions for burglary and trespassing.
June 1: A Portland, Ore., man was arrested for driving with a suspended license following a late afternoon two-car collision at the intersection of Mount Baker and North Beach roads. The 44-year-old, who was behind the wheel of his mother’s pickup when he struck an Orcas man’s Volkswagen bus, was also ticketed for failure to yield and for driving without proof of insurance. His license reportedly had been suspended because of an offense related to driving under the influence.
June 2: An ill-timed fender bender prompted a mid-afternoon arrest of a San Juan Island for a half-dozen alleged offenses at the Port of Friday Harbor marina. The 50-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 3:30 p.m., reportedly backed his pickup into the railing of a dock and was prevented from fleeing the scene by a port employee who dropped a gate to block the route off the dock. The man, whose blood alcohol level was reportedly more than three times the legal limit shortly after the arrest, faces charges of hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license and without a court-ordered interlock device, possession of pot and of paraphernalia, and DUI.
June 3: The smell of burning plastic led to a ticket for an Orcas Island man following a late-night investigation of outdoor burning in a Point Lawrence Road neighborhood. The 45-year-old, who reportedly set fire to a number of prohibited items, was confronted by authorities about the burn pile at about 11:30 p.m. He was ticketed for illegal burning and faces a fine of up to $500.
June 5: A warrant for failing to appear in court led to a mid-afternoon arrest of an Orcas Island man at his Crosswinds Lane home. The 47-year-old, who was taken into custody at about 2:30 p.m., reportedly failed to appear in court on charges of driving with without a license or identification.
June 7: Efforts to revive an unconscious Lopez Island man came to an abrupt halt after authorities discovered a “do-not-resuscitate” directive inside the man’s Junco Road home. A deputy had reportedly been trying to revive the 78-year-old without success for about 40 minutes before the DNR order was discovered among his household belongings.
June 9: A San Juan Island woman was bit by a dog during a shopping trip at the Friday Harbor Market Place. Neither age or breed of the dog, nor extent of the 27-year-old’s injuries, were listed in the report of the incident. Its owner reportedly provided authorities with a statement and with the dog’s record of vaccinations.
June 9: A parental dispute over travel arrangements prompted authorities to intercede and remove a 6-year-old girl from her mother’s car shortly before the two were to leave Friday Harbor onboard a mid-afternoon ferry bound for Anacortes. The 38-year-old woman, a former San Juan Island resident, reportedly intended to take the girl to her Bellevue home without her ex-husband’s permission. The girl, seized by deputies despite protests by the girl’s mother, was turned over to her father following a heated encounter at the ferry landing.
June 11: Use of a cell phone while on the road prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island man for driving with a suspended license following a mid-morning traffic stop on Crescent Beach Road. The 46-year-old, reportedly unaware that talking on a cell phone while driving is an infraction, was also ticketed for driving without proof of insurance, failure to transfer title of his car and for the cell phone offense. The man’s license reportedly expired 12 years ago.
June 13: A San Juan Island man vowed he would no longer leave trash by the side of the road following investigation of a complaint about illegal dumping in the Snug Harbor neighborhood. The 92-year-old reportedly believed that a county road crew would pick up and dispose of the discarded bundle of chicken wire that he left along the side of the road near his Mitchell Bay Road home.
June 12: Failure to buckle up led to the arrest of an Orcas Island man for driving with a suspended license following a late-afternoon traffic stop near the intersection of Main Street and North Beach Road. The 42-year-old, who was pulled over shortly before 4 p.m., has reportedly been driving without a license for 22 years. He was also ticketed for the seat-belt infraction.
