Volunteer needed to help with tax returns
The Lopez Family Resource Center is looking for a community volunteer or retired accountant to help low-income clients fill out income tax returns. Approximately four afternoons in March or April. Please call the LIFRC at 360-468-4117.
Growing vegetables on Lopez
“Growing Vegetables on Lopez” will be presented by Huck Phillips on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the Lopez Senior Center (behind the Fire Hall). Huck has been successfully growing vegetables on Lopez for many years, and will share his experience in keeping vegetable crops producing as long as possible. This discussion is presented by the Lopez Garden Club, which will begin the morning with coffee and a brief meeting at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome! Land Bank meeting
The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its monthly meeting on Friday, Jan. 11. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held in the Conference Room, Whidbey Island Bank, 535 Market Street, Friday Harbor. Public comment time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. The public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.
Camp Nor’wester Evening
Please join Camp Nor’wester to visit with friends, enjoy sweet treats and watch the video made at camp last summer on Thursday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lopez Island Middle School Commons. Writers’ Roundtable
The next Writer’s Roundtable will be on Saturday, Jan. 12, 1-3 at the Orcas Library. This month the group will consider “The Poetry of Prose: Metaphor, Imagery, and Cadence,” presented by Judith Miller, who writes creative non-fiction, is a communications and editorial consultant, as well as a long-time associate of the Institute for Writing and Thinking at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, where she has led many writing workshops. As we begin a new year, they invite newcomers to join with fellow writers in the on-going conversation about writing, to engage in writing activities, and to share excerpts of their work in progress.
“Sicko” film showing
Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko” about the state of health care in the U.S. will be shown at the Odd Fellows Hall in Eastsound on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m. $6 suggested donation.
Loss Support Group
We all long for a new beginning with the start of a new year but sometimes feel held back by the losses that still cling to us. The Loss Support Group at the Lopez Hospice office meets on Friday, Jan. 25, at 1:15 p.m. Drop-ins are always welcome.
