The Friends of Lopez Island Pool are delighted to announce the hiring of Robert and Lois Wardell as construction project architects. Lois and Bob brought property on Lopez 37 years ago and moved from Yakima to be here full time three years ago. The Wardells were the architects for the “silent” reading room for our library and also for Morgantown, Lopez’s first Land Trust project. During the previous 27 years they mainly worked on civic buildings, including a 6.M expansion of the Yakima convention center. The FLIP board feels very fortunate to find someone local and qualified to serve as both architects and project manager.
The Wardells will review previously prepared cost estimates, pull all the different parts together, develop a single project concept incorporating all the elements including pool construction, restroom/shower house. mechanical needs, and foundation for the pool cover. In addition they will meet with the County Building Department and will identify, hire, and oversee the work of the consultants.
Both LoIs and Bob are enthusiastic supporters of the pool, recognizing the need for one here for all ages to use.
“We are looking forward to integrating with the community as well as developing relationships with clients,” said Lois.
Bob said they are up for a new challenge, “It is a complicated project and a big one for Lopez, but Lois and I can pull all of us together and lead the team.”
You may see them out wandering on the pool land off Center Road, especially once earthmoving begins this summer. Not only do we have energized and enthusiastic architects, but also the three SJ County Council members have written a support letter to our State legislators in Olympia stating, “…
This pool on Lopez will be the first and only public pool in San Juan County. The pool will provide health and recreation benefits and offer opportunity for improved safety…”
