Lopez Bookshop welcomes poet William O’Daly on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. O’Daly will read from his translation of Pablo Neruda’s “Book of Twilight.” This was Neruda’s first book, published in Chile when the poet was a teenager; now, Copper Canyon Press is presenting Book of Twilight in its entirety in the U.S. for the first time. Using the highly romantic style refined and empowered in his later books, Neruda’s debut introduces a bold poet unafraid to take risks to give new life to what poetry is meant to do.

The writing, reading, editing, and teaching of poetry have formed the core of William O’Daly’s career, and these endeavors nourish every aspect of his public and personal life.

“Poetry is a way of being in the world,” he said, “and it is within us all.” O’Daly has taught creative writing and literature at nearly every grade level, from elementary school through graduate school. He has been a poet in the schools and appears on a regular basis at the Skagit River Poetry Festival in La Conner, Washington.

Book of Twilight, as well as O’Daly’s poetry collections, “The Road to Isla Negra (an homage to Neruda)” and “Water Ways,” will be available for sale after the presentation.
