The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls.

Jan. 17

• An inmate participating in the In-Custody Inmate Work Crew Program on San Juan Island failed to return to work as instructed, constituting escape.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of possible animal abuse. This case is currently under investigation.

• A deputy in Friday Harbor received a report of a traffic collision. The investigation revealed that a driver failed to yield to traffic while backing out of parking space and collided with another vehicle. The driver of the backing vehicle was cited for failing to yield.

• San Juan Island deputies located a juvenile runaway and returned the juvenile home.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a report of fraud. The victim reported an unauthorized credit card was opened under her name.

• An Orcas Island deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on Crow Valley Road. The driver was issued a citation for driving 50 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. She was also warned for not having her license with her.

Jan. 18

• A San Juan deputy responded to a walk-in report of a missing female juvenile. The deputy obtained the information, checked several possible locations for the juvenile, but was unable to locate her.

• A Lopez Island deputy performed a welfare check on a resident. The deputy discovered that the resident was suffering a mental condition that caused her to become panicked. Lopez EMS and a mental health professional evaluated the subject and determined no additional action was needed.

Jan. 19

• An Orcas Island deputy took a report of a possibly stolen birth certificate and expired passport. The birth certificate was written in Arabic. The items went missing from the reporting party’s vehicle.

• A lost laptop was reported to the sheriff’s office in Friday Harbor.

• An Orcas deputy responded to the Eastsound Fire Station regarding a citizen wanting someone to help her retrieve her belongings after being kicked out of her home by her boyfriend. Assistance was provided and a report was written.

• A Friday Harbor citizen turned in a purse found in the Sunshine Alley restrooms. The purse contained multiple syringes and other drug paraphernalia, a cell phone and other items. An owner could not be located and no one came to claim it.

• A San Juan Island deputy was contacted by a caller in reference to fraud in the Friday Harbor area. The caller advised that money had been sent to an address out of state.

• The Port of Friday Harbor called to report an intoxicated female trying to get into a white truck in its lot. Deputies contacted the woman lying on the ground by the truck. She was intoxicated and required medical attention. She was transported to the ER where she spent the night.

• A San Juan Island deputy was dispatched to a report of a suspicious person in Friday Harbor. The deputy arrived and contacted the people involved. The children at the residence advised that a person was seen looking into the residence. The area was checked and a report was taken.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued an infraction for speeding 38 mph in a 25 mph zone.

• A San Juan Island deputy was contacted regarding a theft in Friday Harbor. The person reported that an item was left behind by accident when cleaning out a storage unit. The item was observed outside the unit by the manager but was later missing.

Jan. 20

• A Lopez Island man was arrested for probation violation and possession of controlled substance – methamphetamine. He was lodged in jail in Friday Harbor pending a court appearance.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for expired tabs. The driver was issued a citation for having an expired registration and not having insurance.

• A deputy on Orcas stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for speeding 37 mph in a 25 mph zone, not having insurance and not having current registration in vehicle.

• An Orcas Island deputy stopped a vehicle on Mount Baker Road. The driver was issued a citation for speed 36 mph in a posted 25 mph zone. He was also warned for not having proof of registration.

• Orcas deputies were dispatched with Orcas Island Fire Rescue to the Olga area for a possible vehicle versus pedestrian wreck. It was determined that the subject was under the influence, and had not been hit by a vehicle. The subject was evaluated by OIFR.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a two-vehicle collision.

• An Orcas Island Deputy was dispatched to an assault that had occurred at an Eastsound business. The assailant was removed from the business by employees.

• A deputy was contacted at the sheriff’s office on San Juan Island regarding a missing juvenile.

Jan. 21

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a commercial burglary alarm at an Eastsound business. The deputy discovered it was a false alarm.

• A deputy responded to a delayed report of a burglary of a business in Friday Harbor. There was no video surveillance, no witnesses and no evidence to be recovered.

• A Lopez Island deputy discovered a tree down, partially blocking Lopez Road. A public works crew cleared the obstruction.

• A Friday Harbor deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Spring Street for failure to signal a right turn and a defective brake light. The driver was issued citations for not having insurance and the defective light.

• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of theft and fraud.

• A man with a warrant for his arrested turned himself in at the sheriff’s office on San Juan Island. The person was booked into jail.

• A Lopez Island deputy was called to assist a local motorist whose vehicle got stuck in the ditch, partially blocking the road. The deputy stood by until the vehicle was safely removed by a tow truck.

• A Friday Harbor deputy responded to a citizen dispute near the Egg Lake Road area. Investigation showed no probable cause for an arrest.

• A Friday Harbor citizen came to the sheriff’s office to report a vehicle theft. A truck had been taken from a relative who was borrowing it, in another county. The reporting party, who owns the truck, had to file the report.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen assist for a malfunctioning garage door. The deputy located the problem and fixed the door, allowing the resident to secure her home.

• An Orcas Island deputy stopped a vehicle on Enchanted Forest Road. The driver, a local man, was issued a citation for not having valid operator’s license and having expired registration. He was also warned for having a defective left tail light and not having proof of liability insurance.

Jan. 22

• A San Juan Island deputy took a walk-in report of a runaway juvenile. The deputy checked a possible location for the juvenile but was unable to locate her.

• A Friday Harbor deputy took a report of a walk-in report of a fraud regarding an unknown individual who attempted to open an account using her name.

• A deputy took a report of a mail theft in Eastsound. The victim reported having two packages stolen from their mailbox.

• Deputies on Orcas arrested a known subject on felony warrants inside an Eastsound residence. The subject had also violated a no-contact order and was booked into jail in Friday Harbor.

• An Orcas Island deputy was assigned to a harassment call.

Jan. 23• Orcas deputies responded to Shaw Island for a welfare check. The subject of the welfare check was not located. The subject’s family started the process of reporting the subject as a missing person.

• A Lopez Island man was stopped and ticketed for speeding 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on Mud Bay Road.
