Paulsen the worthy choice | Letter

Justin Paulsen is my choice for County Council District 2. Justin is a highly competent and intelligent man. He’s endorsed by both outgoing County councilwomen. He has the right policy ideas for our County. Justin has proven his worth in many ways, such as through his role as parks and rec commissioner on Orcas. He works every angle on the Ferry Advisory Committee to repair the system for islanders. Justin is improving the future of our islands.

As a 31-year-old in the San Juans, I feel like a rare bird. My family is lucky to be thriving in this beautiful community that welcomed us. My peers have either flown away to the mainland because they can’t afford a place to live, or they’re working themselves to death trying to scrape out a life here. If Rick Hughes is elected, the chance that we can remain long-term goes down because he will not prioritize housing.

Rick’s business in these islands revolves around the unchecked growth of tourism, which directly increases the bottom line at his gift shops. Rick only wants to see more foot traffic through the door. If he’s fixing the ferries he’s fixing a route to buy a plastic camp kit from his store. Justin will fix the ferries because it’s the right thing to do for local transportation.

Rick brags and talks a big game, but those who know him know he falls short on all three words of his campaign slogan. Justin Paulsen shows by his community service that he is a far better choice for San Juan County. Justin raises up those around him while Rick talks over them. I speak for many young voters when I say that Justin is the best choice for our future.
