Wave for civility

I have long cherished a Lopez Island tradition, The “Lopez Wave.” Whenever you pass an oncoming car, you give a friendly wave. You don’t know if that person is progressive, Republican, or Democrat, or whatever. You do know it is a human being! In this era of national division, I believe the “Lopez Wave” is a small chance to help restore community unity and civility.

The history of the “Lopez Wave,” may be different than now, but I believe it is pertinent to the current national malaise.

I hesitate to give up the Lopez-centric “wave,” but it may be useful for our country. This thought was prompted by a drive on Lopez today.
