This year’s Lopez Community Trails Network’s “Go Take A Hike” schedule starts with something different: a bike and hike of Guemes Island on Saturday, May 13.
We start at the Lopez Ferry Landing with your bike on the 9:30 a.m. ferry to Anacortes. After the hill on the Anacortes side, we will wend our way through the back streets until we reach the Guemes Ferry Landing. The ferry leaves every thirty minutes and there is a $4 round trip charge ($3 for seniors) for bike and rider. We can stop at the Guemes General Store for treats and then begin our five-mile ride to Guemes Mountain Trailhead (with a bike rack) where after mile and a quarter hike to the summit, the highest point on Guemes, there is a great view of the San Juans and Cypress Island. And then it’s a two-mile ride back to the Guemes ferry landing and then we reverse our ride back to the Anacortes Ferry Landing. There is a $2 bicycle surcharge plus your fare back to Lopez.
In June we hike to the summit of Mt. Entrance on Orcas over private (we have permission) and Land Bank property. In July we explore the Roche Harbor/English Camp trails with a guide from the San Juan Island Trails Committee. In August we will hike the new John Tursi Trail between Campbell Lake and Pass Lake north of Deception Pass State Park that passes an old copper mine, a miner’s cabin, and a view down into Naked Man’s Valley. And we finish up in September with Ptarmigan Ridge near Mt. Baker through shale and meadow; it is a moderate hike with a two or four mile turn around option.
