Island kids gave it their all at the San Juan County Fair, Aug. 16-19. Here is a sampling of how the Lopez competitors did.
Thirteen-year-old Travis Arnott earned swine and beef intermediate showmanship, 4-H outstanding beef member and champion market beef.
Nine-year-old Danielle Arnott took home high point junior photography and swine junior showmanship and the Lopez perseverance award for horsemanship.
Josh Kramer, 13, won reserve champion in market sheep and grand champion in feeder lamb. He also rode in open class gaming and won overall high point in the young adult division.
Eleven-year-old Aiden Willis won grand champion in junior goat showmanship, grand champion in pygmy goat wether, grand champion junior in horse performance showmanship, a trophy for high point junior in Western classes, Lopez outstanding horse care trophy, three grand champion ribbons for gaming events, reserve champion dog showmanship, a grand champion for dog judging, the mechanical Services trophy for his forestry project and first place ribbons for his three open class pygmy goats.
Ten-year-old Hailey King brought home the Lopez best sportsmanship award for horses, junior high point trail trophy and most promising show career. It was her first fair competition.
Sixteen-year-old Hunter Buffum qualified for the state fair in four horse events: performance, gaming, driving and dressage. She also earned 4-H gaming high point senior division, open western high point, open English high point and the Lopez shining Star award.
