Submitted by Lopez Island School District
The Lopez Island School District was recently named a Green Ribbon School Awardee. The program is one done by the US Department of Education and recognizes those schools and districts who are making significant progress towards “reducing environmental impact and costs; improving the health and wellness of the school, students and staff; and providing effective environmental and sustainability education.”
Our district was named alongside Oak Harbor and Lakewood. One will be selected out of the three and will go on to represent Washington state on a national level, to go on for a national award.
The recent renovation played a critical part by installing new lighting and heating systems that are more efficient. Our Farm to School program, LIFE, is acclaimed throughout the state as a leader in that form of education. Many of the school’s classes have a focus on sustainability and spend a meaningful amount of time outside.
