The San Juan County Parks, Recreation, and Fair Department is pleased to announce the beginning of new trail work at Shark Reef County Park on Lopez Island. Work begins on Monday, June 13 to build a new half-mile trail extension that will spur from the main trail and turn south toward the southernmost point of the park. This will create a loop, offering new scenery and the opportunity to reduce traffic by dispersing hikers. The park hopes to open the trail to users by Friday, June 17.
The San Juan County Parks, Recreation, and Fair Department is partnering with The Lopez Community Trails Network and the American Hiking Society to construct the new trail. Rozewood Environmental Services, Inc. approved the project after completing an assessment of the new trail location and did not identify any potential hazards or sensitive areas of concern.
Additional upgrades to Shark Reef include connecting, replacing, and building new sections of boardwalk totaling over 300 feet by the end of the year. If you would like to help volunteer with any of these projects, please contact the Lopez/Shaw Island Parks Manager at 360-468-2496 or you can email us at odlin@sanjaunco.com.
