The Samish was ready to depart Lopez Island en route to Anacortes on Aug. 7, when a man, Justice Mack, flagged down a crewmember and explained that his wife was in labor on the car deck.
The ferry crew and several passengers immediately took action.
According to King5 News, cars nearby were moved to make space for medical responders, and the mother, Candice, was moved to the medical room. At 3:34 p.m. she gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Arlo.
Passengers cheered when the announcement was made. The mother and child were then airlifted to Anacortes for medical care. Baby Arlo weighed 7 lbs and 1 oz.
Captain Noah Landow told King5 that in his 26 years of working for the WSF, this was the second time a baby had been born aboard one of his boats.
WSF reported Arlo is doing great, along with mom, dad and his five-year-old sister, all of whom live in Friday Harbor.
