Literacy is as important now as it ever has been for people of all ages, and not only for reading books. Our world is comprised of words and reading from websites, smartphones, apps to social media. Reading is everywhere and for everyone. Research also shows that when families read together, the love and skill of reading becomes a deeply embedded practice and value for the whole family.
To support families reading together in community the Lopez Library’s Summer Reading Program theme is ALL TOGETHER NOW! /TODOS JUNTOS. Come join us every Thursday from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Lopez Library in July and August as we celebrate kindness, friendship, and learning.
Every Thursday, the group will begin with one of our excellent staff reading selected chapters aloud, followed by wonderful activities and discussions that go with the month’s specially curated book. There will be weekly activities at the library as well as fun ways to engage through the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages. Come by to pick up a Summer Passport and track activities throughout the season. Completion of the passport will enter your child’s favorite stuffed animal or toy for a stuffy sleepover at the library.
Families with children ages 0-10 are invited to participate in a family read of two amazing books. In July we will read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
This award-winning book tells the story of fourteen-year-old William Kamkwamba’s and what happened when his Malawi village was hit by a drought and everyone’s crops began to fail. Without enough money for food, let alone school, William spent his days in the library … and figured out how to bring electricity to his village. Persevering against the odds, William built a functioning windmill out of junkyard scraps and thus became the local hero who harnessed the wind.
Lyrically told and gloriously illustrated, this story will inspire many as it shows how – even in the worst of times – a great idea and a lot of hard work can still rock the world.
In August we will read The Donut Fix which is described as Superfudge meets The Lemonade War in this funny, heartwarming book about change, adventure, family, and of course, doughnuts.
The Lopez Library welcomes island families will come join us for this fun Summer Learning Program, and cultivate a love of reading “All Together Now”.
