San Juan Islands Conservation District is excited to announce a fundraising initiative to support the Youth Conservation Corps Winter Program. The campaign aims to raise $9,400 and will be featured during the San Juan County Fair from August 15 to 18.
In its 17th year, YCC continues expanding beyond its successful 8-week summer program to include a robust winter program. Participants aged 12-18 will work on public lands, tackling invasive plant species and removing ladder fuels. Partnering with local organizations such as Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, San Juan County Conservation Land Bank, and San Juan Preservation Trust, the winter program will run over ten Saturdays from January to May. Building on the success of last year’s pilot, this program will continue its mission to engage local youth during the colder months and improve local wildfire preparedness, forest health, and wildlife habitat.
YCC is recognized not only for its positive impact on the island ecosystems but also for its role in providing outdoor education in a uniquely accessible way. Crew members earn a daily stipend, which can add up to $250 for the program, making it a valuable opportunity for teens and an affordable option for families seeking meaningful activities.
As part of the San Juan Island Community Foundation’s 2024 SJI Cares County Fair Giving Campaign, SJICD is poised to make the most of this fundraising opportunity. Donations made during the fair will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $1,000 by the Community Foundation, with additional bonus grants of up to $2,500 available. Contributions can be made in person at the SJICF fair booth, online at sjicares.org, by phone at 360-378-1001, or by mailing a check (dated between August 15-18) to SJICF, P.O. Box 1352, Friday Harbor, WA 98250, with “SJICD” in the memo line.
