The Hamlet on Lopez Island has long been a sanctuary for seniors, providing not only housing but a true sense of community. Over the years, it has grown into a vital part of life here, offering both independent living cottages and an adult family home that provide a way for seniors to stay connected to the island they love as they age. Maintaining relationships benefits not only the residents but also their families, friends and neighbors.
For those unfamiliar with The Hamlet, our mission is simple but powerful: to provide safe, convenient housing for people aged 55 and older. We offer 14 charming garden cottages for independent living and an adult family home for eight residents needing 24-hour care. Half of our cottages are available at reduced rent for those with limited incomes, and up to two beds in our adult family home are for Medicaid clients. We do our best to ensure that The Hamlet remains an affordable and welcoming place for all.
The Hamlet is more than just a place to live — it’s a place to belong. Residents look out for each other and enjoy socializing together. They may share freshly baked goods, or at times take a neighbor’s dog for a walk. In addition, residents’ input is valued by the administration and their voices are heard in decision-making and management. We also do our best to help residents maintain their independence. Our values are built on mutual respect, transparency, fiscal responsibility and service. We are committed to maintaining a culture where residents from diverse economic and social backgrounds feel honored, welcomed and supported.
Like any cherished home, The Hamlet’s buildings and grounds have faced the test of time. Last year, we took a close look at what was necessary to keep them vibrant for future generations. After a thorough assessment was made to evaluate their condition, it became clear that we needed to update our long-term maintenance plan. To ensure the future health and longevity of The Hamlet, we launched a campaign near the end of 2023 to strengthen our Long-Term Maintenance Fund. The response from the community has been incredible, bringing us within $25,000 of our $300,000 fundraising goal.
Our first essential project, made possible because of the support of so many, has included installing new flooring in Hamlet House and several cottages. Worn carpet was replaced with luxury vinyl plank flooring which is not only easier to maintain and safer for the residents but also far more durable. Next, we plan to repaint the exterior of Hamlet House and the Gathering Place. These two buildings have not been painted since The Hamlet was built in 2008, and a fresh coat of paint will help preserve them. In addition, we will continue to install flooring in lieu of carpet where it is necessary, replace windows as they fail and do a much-needed mini renovation of the Hamlet House shower room.
As we continue with our long-term maintenance plan, we will share more updates and milestones. Thank you to the many individuals that have been a part of The Hamlet’s story. We look forward to continuing to work with our community to meet the housing needs of senior Lopezians and their families for many years to come.
