The people of Lopez Island have an extraordinary gift, a gift which they give very freely: caring. They give their time, their effort, their money, and their love.

It’s extraordinary that on this small island with a population of around 2300, there are over 40 non-profit organizations! All of these organizations exist because of the continued dedication of volunteers. Many more of us would like to be able to volunteer for these worthy causes but, unfortunately, because we have family and business obligations, we aren’t always in a position to make a commitment to be available on a regular basis.

But now we have a solution for all you frustrated volunteers. Because we don’t want you to miss out on the chance to work with other volunteers whenever the opportunity arises, you’re being invited to join a growing group of people who have enthusiastically expressed their willingness to help in any way they can – when they’re available. We’ll let you know personally by e-mail whenever a project comes up! Then, if you have some spare time, you can come along.

With enough people, we’ll always have a big enough pool of volunteers to call on and, knowing Lopezians, we’ll always get a very good turnout. Even just an hour or two a couple of times a year from each person can help tremendously. In this way, there’s no need for a regular commitment and no one is under any obligation.

The name of the group is the League Of Volunteers Enterprises. (And, no, it’s no accident that the anagram for the name spells LOVE!) Here’s how it works. Just send an e-mail to Adrian (the Aussie) Cameron at adriangcameron@gmail.com. In the subject line, put “Volunteers,” and just type your name in the text box. It’s that simple! When a project comes up, an e-mail will be sent out to all the volunteers on the list stating what the project is and who it’s for, and when and where to get together. All the people who have the time, skills, and inclination will come along, and we’ll get the job done in no time …. and probably have a lot of fun doing it! That’s all there is to it.

Although we may not be able to respond to all the requests for help, if you know of any organization or family that needs our volunteer services, please mention that in the e-mail you send.

And, by the way, I’d “LOVE” to hear from people from the other islands as well who would like to get involved in volunteering in their “neck of the woods”!
