The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
Sept. 29
• A Lopez Island resident reported receiving two “robocalls” that were believed to be a fraud scam. The resident wisely did not respond to the calls, despite the threat of “legal action.”
• A Lopez deputy gave a driver a warning for speeding in a school zone and failing to carry driver’s license.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a trespassing call in Deer Harbor. The reporting party wished to have someone served with a trespass warning letter. The person was found and stated they understood that if they returned they would be arrested.
• A Lopez Island deputy completed a junk vehicle affidavit for a property owner for a derelict vehicle that had been abandoned on private property so the vehicle could be properly disposed of.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a Lopez citizen who wanted to express frustration with a prior domestic living situation.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to trespassing at a local business. The individual was arrested and removed from the property.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a trespassing call. The subject was escorted off the property. Charges have been filed.
Sept. 30
• A distant relative of an island resident requested a welfare check. The request was vague in nature, likely a no-contact order violation, and was an attempt to bypass CPS agreements.
• A San Juan deputy observed a vessel without a permit moored at the Roche Harbor County Dock.
• An Orcas deputy disposed of a small amount of old ammunition turned in by a citizen. A report was authored for the destruction of the property.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a welfare check call. A Lopez citizen was provided mental health resources.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of threats regarding Facebook messages about the mask mandate. No direct threats were made and the incident was documented.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of fraud. It appeared that the reporting party ordered a product from a non-legitimate website and did not receive the item ordered.
• An unknown person shined a light into a Lopez business late at night and spooked an employee. Upon investigation, the person in question was seeking assistance. They were staying in a nearby lodge and were unsure of how to unlock and access their room.
Oct. 1
• A Lopez resident requested a report be completed documenting unwelcome behavior from a past acquaintance.
• A Lopez deputy conducted an animal cruelty death investigation. Charges were forwarded to the court.
• An Orcas deputy assisted a citizen by issuing a Junk Vehicle Affidavit to remove a vehicle from their property.
•An Orcas deputy took a report of possible harassment involving contact by an unwanted man.
• A deputy was dispatched to a vehicle theft in the Friday Harbor area. The reporting deputy checked the area where the vehicle was last seen but did not locate the vehicle.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of sick animals. Multiple cats were located deceased on the reporting party’s property. There is no known cause at this time.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver citations for not having a valid license with ID and not having insurance.
• A deputy was dispatched to a sick animal in the San Juan Island area. The deputy arrived and located a deceased seal on the beach. The seal appeared to be dead for a while. Photos of the seal were taken.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle as the driver was not wearing a safety belt. The driver was issued citations for not wearing a safety belt and operating a motor vehicle without insurance. They were also given multiple warnings.
• A Lopez Island deputy was called about a barking dog that was going non-stop from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. The dog’s owner was identified and contacted about the situation.
Oct. 2
• A Lopez deputy was called about vandalism to a vehicle. A side window was discovered broken in an unlocked car parked in a rural residential driveway. A rock, thrown by a riding lawnmower, was determined to be the culprit.
• A Lopez Island deputy was called to investigate vandalism to a utility cable. The utility company advised the customer it was likely a system problem rather than a line problem.
• A San Juan deputy was contacted in reference to child abuse. The deputy spoke with the people reporting the incident. The incident occurred in another jurisdiction.
• An Orcas deputy investigated an allegation of threats on Point Lawrence Rd. None of the involved parties wanted any law enforcement action taken.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a domestic call. During the investigation, it was determined that there was no domestic crime, however, the case will be forwarded to Child Protective Services to address some concerns.
• An Orcas deputy assisted a resident with a Junk Vehicle Affidavit to remove a vehicle from a property on Alder St.
• Orcas Island deputies were dispatched with Orcas Island Fire and Rescue to a boating accident on the north shore of Orcas. The reporting party advised that the boat was on the rocks. The sole occupant of the vessel was rescued by the USCG helicopter crew and transported for medical treatment.
• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a call of a domestic dispute on Olga Road. An investigation was conducted, and it was determined no crime was committed.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a traffic accident call. A vehicle drove off the road into a patch of blackberries. The driver was not located.
• An Orcas deputy responded to an unwanted person call on Alder St. An investigation was conducted and no crime was committed.
Oct. 3
Orcas deputies were dispatched to a verbal domestic in the Eastsound area. No crime was committed, and the parties voluntarily separated.
San Juan Deputy responded to a domestic disturbance. All parties were contacted and the incident was determined to be non-criminal.
Oct. 4
• A reporting deputy was dispatched to a traffic accident in the San Juan Island area. The deputy arrived and located a single vehicle off the roadway and into a tree. There was no driver on the scene. The vehicle was impounded.
• A Lopez deputy took a report of hunters trespassing on private property. The hunters were gone when the deputy arrived. The matter is under investigation.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a citizen assist near Eastsound. Under the new laws, no enforcement could be taken. A report was taken and both parties were separated.
• An Orcas Island deputy was dispatched to a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident at a local business. It was later determined that the driver did not know they had struck the victim’s car and insurance information was exchanged.
• A deputy on San Juan Island responded to a report of a single-vehicle roll-over collision. The driver was arrested for DUI and issued citations for wheels off roadway, open alcohol container and open marijuana container.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a vandalism call. An investigation was conducted and a report was completed.
• A reporting deputy was dispatched to a trespassing call in the Friday Harbor area. The person involved was not at the time but a trespass warning letter was prepared and signed by the business. The person will be served with the warning letter when located.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to an unwanted person call. The subject was removed from the property.
Oct. 5
• A Lopez deputy stopped and ticketed a motorist for speeding in a school zone.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a Lopez residence to an unattended death. An investigation indicated that the deceased passed away from natural causes.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle as the owner did not have a driver’s license. The driver was issued an infraction for not having a valid license with ID and the deputy’s report will be sent to the Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision regarding driving without an ignition interlock device.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle as the driver had a suspended driver’s license. A citation was issued for operating a motor vehicle without insurance and the deputy’s report will be forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision.
• A San Juan deputy investigated a report of a hit-and-run collision on Argyle St.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a disorderly conduct call. Two citizens drove around the ferry terminal yelling at people. They had departed the scene by the time a deputy arrived.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a disturbance in a tavern. The deputy arrived and separated the parties. Two patrons were removed at the request of the establishment. No parties wished to cooperate with criminal prosecution.
Oct. 6
• A vehicle slowly drove by a Lopez property. The occupants of the vehicle were looking out the window and yelling. No crime occurred.
