How to make table arrangement and holiday wreaths

Back by popular demand! Debbie Collins will again share her talent by showing how to create unique table arrangements and holiday wreaths using native island plants and treasures. She will demonstrate how to change them to suit different occasions making your holiday decorating more fun and versatile. The meeting will be on Thursday, Oct. 9, downstairs below the fire station where the Lopez Senior Center is located. Coffee and goodies at 9:30 a.m. Meeting at 10 a.m. Please come – everyone is welcome! Sponsored by Lopez Island Garden Club.

Harvest Festival

The whole family is invited to a Harvest Festival presented by The Friends of Woodmen Hall. Saturday, October 11, 11 to 3 p.m. at Woodmen Hall. Games, prizes and fun for the entire family – don’t miss the return of the great “Chicken Drop”! Plan to join them for a delicious lunch, then pick up desert at the fabulous bake sale. Plus: several local vendors will be on hand, so come start your holiday shopping. Proceeds will benefit the renovation of Woodmen Hall.

Harvest Dance

Have you heard about the Harvest Dance yet? Get the family together and put your dancin’ shoes on! There will be contra dancing, square dancing and waltzes, fresh pressed cider and home made pie. Live musicians from Lopez Island will kick the night off and a portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Orcas Island Food Bank. Who: You, and me and our nearest and dearest … and anyone who loves to dance, of course. What: a dance; a celebration of community, of season of spirit. When: Friday, Oct. 3, 7-11 p.m. Where: The Oddfellows Hall.

Turtleback Mountain stewardship plan

The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, Oct. 10 in the Hotel Dining Room, Orcas Hotel (next to the ferry landing). The meeting begins at 10 a.m. A Public Hearing to consider adoption of the Revised Draft Turtleback Mountain Preserve Stewardship and Management Plan. Public comment time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Public testimony will be heard. General public comment time is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Boys basketball

Most families are likely busy with either the current soccer or football seasons but now is the time to register for Island Rec’s Boy’s Basketball League open to boys in grades 4th through 8th. Deadline to register is October 3 with the season beginning early in November. All games are played on San Juan Island on Sunday afternoons. Registration forms can be picked up from the schools or from Island Rec located at 580 Guard Street or printed off at www.islandrec.org. Registration fee is $35. Depending on space availability, registrations will be accepted after October 3. The late registration fee is $40. Contact Abby Spann at 378-4953 for more information about the league, or if you are interested in volunteering as a coach or official.

Find Joe Friday (Centennial Mystery Hunt)

Join Island Rec to celebrate the Town of Friday Harbor’s Centennial and learn a little bit of history on October 5. Get your team or family together and join them on a scavenger hunt around the town of Friday Harbor. Discover intrigue and mystery … people, places and things you never knew … and need to know! Celebrate the centennial in a unique way, get souvenirs, prizes, knowledge and exercise all in one. This mystery hunt is a combination of the Amazing Race and Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader. Registration forms are available at Island Rec. Cost is $10 per team with a maximum of five people per team. Day of event registrations will be accepted at the High School Parking Lot from 12-12:45 p.m. The hunt begins at 1 p.m. in the High School Parking Lot on Sunday, October 5. This event is open to all ages.
