Fri., March 12

Winter Carnival fundraiser: Lopez School, This fundraiser supports the Lopez’s fifth graders attending Islandwood, an environmental learning center on Bainbridge Island. For three days this spring, the kids will join other ethically diverse students from Puget Sound-area, to discover natural connections with the outdoors through science, technology and the arts. Islandwood is a great compliment to Lopez’s farm to school program and existing class based science curriculum.

Lopez Gardeners: 9:30 a.m., Woodman Hall Senior Center on Fisherman Bay Road. Christine Langley presents: “Starting With Seeds,” Christine has been growing food on Lopez Island since 1991. She is the owner/operator of Lopez Harvest and markets all her produce on Lopez. Her presentation will include demonstrations, samples, hands on experience.

Annual Dog Licenses: Lopez Village Market. Lopez Animal Protection Society will be selling dog licenses. Annual dog licenses are required in San Juan County and there is a $10 late fee after March 31.

“Radical Reels”: 5:30 p.m., Lopez Center for Community and the Arts. Part of the Banff Film Festival, the “Radical Reels” is a selection of top quality, adrenaline filled films featuring sports such as skiing, climbing, kayaking, BASE jumping, snowboarding and mountain biking. The event is being run as a fund raiser for the Lopez Center and the Family Resource Center. Admission: Ticketed $10 adult, $5 youth, buy tickets in advance or at the door.

“Storytime”: 11 a.m. – noon, Lopez Library, Helen Anderson Children’s Room. For toddlers and pre-schoolers. During the year guest storytellers are featured.

Dreams and Financial Goals: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m, Lopez Library. Dreams and Financial Goals is a Workshop that will help you better understand your personal finances and provide you with budget management and financial tracking tools that will enable you to move closer to your financial dreams. Materials, personalized hands on exercises, and other resources will be provided.

Acoustic performance by Shae Fiol: 7 p.m. Includes a Salsa Dance and Dance lesson. DJ salsa music and lesson provided by Raul Fiol and Ileana Rowe Woodmen Hall, Fisherman Bay Road suggested donation for adults is $10 Singer/Songwriter Shae Fiol, the daughter of Lopez residents Beth Geever and Bruce Ellestad, is performing her second tour of the Pacific Northwest. She’ll be playing solo acoustic renditions from her debut album “Catch a Ride” which features production by Grammy award winning producers Stuart Matthewman (Sade, Maxwell) and Rockwilder (Moulin Rouge, Beyonce). Shae was recently named a finalist for Best New Artist of 2009 by SoulTracks online magazine.

Evening Meals at School: 5:30 – 7 p.m. Be a part of this festive community gathering that supports local, seasonal, and sustainably grown food from island farms. A kid-friendly option of plain grains and raw vegetables and a wheat-free version of the dessert are available at every meal. This is a donations-only event.
