Community Contra And Square Dance: 7:30 p.m., Lopez Community Center. Traditional Appalachian dance music played by Carol Noyes on banjo, Matt Hummel on fiddle and Eric Hall on guitar. All dances will be taught and called by Marlin Prowell of Bellingham. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for 16 and under. Ages 6 and under get in free.

SalmonAtion 2011: 5:30 p.m. Salmonation is back. Join Lopez’s team of volunteer salmon researchers for food, wine, music, art on display and for sale, and an update on what they are learning about the diet and health of migrating juvenile salmon in the islands. new year’s eve event: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., Mullis Center. Bring in the New Year with family, friends, and neighbors. Island Rec and the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition will be joining up once again to offer this alcohol-free community party. Music, entertainment, dancing, games, contests, and activities provide fun for people of all ages. The party will have the clocks set to Eastern Standard Time to ring in the New Year. All ages are welcome; youth under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring a savory or sweet snack to share. No fee, no registration.

Island Rec’s Teen Friday Night Fun: 8 – 10 p.m., Turnbull Gym. Free.

New Year’s Eve Bash: Herb’s Tavern, 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Complimentary champagne at midnight, party favors and cocktail specials all night. Suitable for 21 and over. Music provided by the Tease.

Polar Bear Plunge: Cascade Lake Picnic Shelter, Moran State Park. Open to all. The Orcas Island Rowing Club invites you to start the New Year with a quick dip at Cascade Lake. The event is a low key fundraiser for the junior rowing club. Donations are accepted. Contact Dave Roseberry, 376-4733.
