Laura Daugereau, Washington’s first woman to compete in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, is coming to San Juan Island for a presentation about her rookie run this year. She will be speaking and showing slides at the San Juan Island Library on Saturday, June 7 at 7:00 p.m. The presentation at the library is a rare opportunity to meet a seasoned musher, and see first hand her love for her dogs and their love for her. This fascinating presentation is free and open to all ages.

Global to local video and discussion

Videos pertaining to global trends in agriculture, environment and social welfare. Learn about solutions currently happening on Orcas Island and why they are vitally important for the planet. Thursday, June 12, 7-9 p.m. at the Funhouse. Ages: 14 and up. Cost: donations go to support the F.E.A.S.T. program.

SJC Land Bank meeting

The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, June 13.

The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held in the Council Hearing Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. Public comment time is scheduled for 9 a.m. The public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.

LCLT Board Meeting

The Lopez Community Land Trust Board of Directors will meet at the Lopez Library on Monday, June 16 from 7-9 p.m. All are welcome!

Poetry reading at SJ Library

John Sangster, poet, Lopezian, County Fair written word judge, and most impressively, Human Earthkin, will be reading at the San Juan Island Library on one of the luckiest days of the year, Friday, June 13. John is coming with a new book in hand, “Island Year” from Pudding House Publications. Tom Odegard, host, poet, gadfly, and San Juan Island resident, will be reading new and older work with John. An open microphone will follow the duet by John and Tom. So dust off your old stuff or write something new to energize our current weather into something more like late spring.

Writer’s roundtable

The next writers’ roundtable will be on Saturday, June 14 at the Orcas Library from 1-3 p.m. They will continue the theme of memoir writing in prose and poetry. Join fellow writers for conversation and writing. Writers are invited to bring excerpts of their work in progress to share, as well as excerpts from memoir writing that they find energizing.  All are welcome.

REC X June programs

Island Rec has some great programs coming up in June. Take an archery class June 19 and 20 and learn this challenging sport that you can enjoy your whole life. If you’re looking for something less physical, the Songwriting workshop is a fantastic opportunity to turn those poems or thoughts into songs. There’s still room in the day kayak trip with San Juan Island Outfitters and the rock climbing trip at the Bellingham YMCA too, so don’t miss out. Register now! Youth golf clinic at Orcas Golf Course

High school golf coach, Bobby Olmstead, will teach golf skills  such as chipping, putting, and proper form. Golfers may stick around for an extra half hour after the clinic and play some more if they wish. Beginners and those with golf experience are welcome. Registration forms are available at www.orcasrec.orgor by calling the Orcas Island Recreation Program at 376-5339. Mondays & Wednesdays, June 23 – July 16 from 10:00 to 11:00 (or 11:30). Ages 8-11 and 12-up. The cost is $70.

Theatre camp for kids and teens

Orcas Center offers Theatre Camp for children 5+ and teens. Theatre Camp will meet daily from Monday, June 23 through Saturday, July 5. The 2008 Theatre Camp theme is “Cirque d’Orcas” and will feature teaching artists from the thrilling Dream Science Circus. Exciting circus skills will be taught, as will perseverance, team work, and self-confidence. All participants will be eligible to join a procession in the Historical Day Parade as well as a Center Stage performance on July 5. Cirque d’Orcas is offered to teens and children ages 5+ through a partnership between Orcas Center and Orcas Island Recreation Program. Tuition is $150, and registration is through Orcas Center (376-ACT1) or Orcas Island Recreation Program (376-5339). If participation creates an economic hardship, contact Orcas Center or the Orcas Rec. Program to discuss scholarship opportunities.

Natural/cultural history weekend camp

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), San Juan County 4-H and Island Rec have teamed up again to offer this educational and fun weekend overnight camp to youth ages 8-10. Campers will experience hands-on marine and forest ecology exploration, cultural history activities, fun and educational games, a canoeing adventure, and a cooperative camping experience for all. Camp begins at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 27 and ends at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29. Cost is only $25. Space is limited, so register today! Based at English Camp, activities are taught by trained educators from OMSI, as well as staff from the National Parks service. 4-H Teen Leaders will assist OMSI staff. Shark Reef submission deadline is June 30

Attention, writers and artists! SHARK REEF is accepting submissions for its fall issue until June 30. All San Juan County writers are eligible to submit. Check the website at sharkreef.org for submission guidelines.

Skyhawks multi-sports camp comes To Orcas

The largest provider of youth sports programs in the country is coming to Orcas Island. The Skyhawks Multi-Sports Camp provides opportunities for participants to gain experience in several sports: soccer, baseball, and basketball. There is no pressure, just lots of fun, while young athletes participate in all three sports through unique Skyhawks games. This will be the second year on Orcas Island. The camp for boys and girls ages 7-12 runs during the first week of public school vacation, June 23-27 from 9-3 at Buck Park; children who need childcare until 5 p.m. will have supervision until then. Adult softball league on Orcas

If you would like to organize a team or be part of a team for this summer’s softball league, call Ian Harlow (376-6950) or the Orcas Island Recreation Program (376-5339). Games will be Tuesdays and Thursdays (5:30-7:30) at Buck Park, starting July 1.

Youth sailing

Sail Orcas announces the 15th year of the Orcas Island Junior Sailing Program. Students between the ages of eight and 15 will have the opportunity this summer to learn to sail in a variety of boats and under a variety of conditions. Hannah Tuson-Turner is the lead instructor. Hannah went through the Junior Sailing program, raced successfully with Orcas High School, and is now sailing competitively for the University of Hawaii. She is a certified USA Sailing Instructor. Weekly classes are available Mondays-Thursdays and are held at the Orcas Island Yacht Club in West Sound. Beginners will sail 9 to noon; intermediate and advanced sailors sail from 1 to 4:00. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis through Orcas Island Recreation Program. Registration forms and additional information are available at www.orcasrec.org, at the Rec. The British are coming!

Island Rec is pleased to announce that one of the most respected and experienced soccer training organizations in the U.S., Challenger Sports British Soccer Camps, is coming back to Friday Harbor this summer. The week-long camp offers exciting sessions for ALL levels of players from the complete novice up to the experienced competitive players. Half-day camps for novice players will be held July 7-11 and August 18-22. Minisoccer for kids ages four and five is also scheduled for the July week. A full day camp for experienced players will take place during the August camp. Registration forms are now available at Island Rec at 580 Guard Street or www.islandrec.org. More dates for summer workshops

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center’s (LIFRC) “Beginning Sailing” classes have been extremely popular! They have added two more sessions to help meet demand: BEGSAIL-6 on July 7-11 from 9:30-12:30, and BEGSAIL-5 on Aug. 4-8 from 1:00-4:00. Some room is available in Intermediate classes and Racing 1, but sign up soon to be sure you get the classes you want! Classes are $82. Sailing scholarships available.

Due to popular demand, Tracie RedElk has added another awesomely FUN overnight kayaking adventure. Depart on August 14, paddle to Shaw, camp, and return on August 15. Cost is $85.

All swimming classes are currently FULL, so LIFRC has added another session, BEGSWIM-3, from 2:00-3:00 on June 23-26. Maximum seven participants ages six through nine, so register soon!
