Historian, photographer and author of the historical novel “Vis Major.” The book is the culmination of more than 40 years of research by Burwash of an often overlooked piece of Washington history, as well as North America’s worst avalanche disaster to date.

Lessons and Carols Service: 4 p.m., Grace Episcopal Church. Musicians Roger Sherman, organ, Celia Rosenberger and Rose Jeffries, violins, Ingrid Matthews, cello, and the church choir led by Karen Gerarden, in singing carols and hearing readings from the Bible. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is an Anglican worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus and traditionally used in Advent and Christmas. The story of the fall of man, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns. Free and open to the public.
