Film Noir at Lopez Library
Lopez Library is showing a film noir every Saturday at 2 p.m. in May. The films are as follows: “Double Indemnity,” “Maltese Falcon,” and “The Big Sleep.”
Pizza and Open Mic nights
Pizza and Open Mic on Thursday Nights at Doe Bay on Orcas will benefit the Orcas Island Recreation Program during the month of May. The event runs from 5-10 p.m., with music starting between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
Grain Growing on Lopez
“Grain Growing on Lopez” will be presened on Tuesday, May 13, 5:30 p.m. at the Grange, sponsored by Lopez Community Food Network and Lopez Locavores. Anyone interested in growing, trading, gleaning, buying, eating and/or promoting Lopez-grown food is encouraged to come.
SJC Land Bank meeting
The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, May 16. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held in the Conference Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, Friday Harbor. Public comment time is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
The Secret Lives of Happy People
“The Secret Lives of Happy People,” a free public talk with Buddhist Monk Kelsang Norbu, will be on Saturday, May 17, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Orcas Island Public Library, 500 Rose St., Eastsound. Everyone wants to be happy and nobody wants to suffer. So how are some people able to remain happy, even in difficult situations, while others are constantly miserable, even in the best conditions? By changing the way we view ourselves, others, and the world around us, we can find an inexhaustible source of happiness within our own mind.
How to create a memorable experience for customers
Delivering “good” customer service isn’t good enough any more. You need to provide the kind of service that people will remember and come back for. An interactive workshop, “Exceeding Customer Expectations,” is being sponsored by the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce, the NW Workforce Development Council and the San Juan County Economic Development Council. The workshop will be held May 22 from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Orcas Conference Room at Elements Hotel. The instructor will be Minnie Knych. Bob Myhr public meeting
Please join County Council Member Bob Myhr at the Lopez Library on Thursday, May 22, 4:00-5:30 p.m., for a discussion of local and county issues, including County Charter implemenation status, Lopez Village UGA and parking, Odlin Park South, Fisherman Bay Road plan, ferries, and other current issues. Everyone is encouraged to attend and provide comments and input about county policy.
Jamie Laval in concert
Jamie Laval will perform a concert of Celtic instrumental music on May 29, 8 p.m. at Lopez Center. Laval is one of the top Scottish fiddlers on the international touring musicians’ circuit today. Joined by mandolin virtuoso Ashley Broder, the duo renders traditional Irish and Scottish music with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world, creating a completely unique approach to roots-based acoustic music. Andrea O’Bryant and Fascinating Rhythm Dance present the Tap 08 Show, an annual Lopez Island favorite, on Friday, May 30, 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 31, 7:00 p.m. at Lopez Center. Jazz at the Labs
On Saturday, June 7, Friday Harbor Laboratories will hold its 8th annual Jazz at the Labs, an evening of food, fun and great music at the Labs. There will be dinner and music from 6:00-7:00 p.m., with music provided by Dennis Willows and the San Juan Jazz Sextet. Starting at 7:00 p.m. Jay Thomas and Jazz Coalescence, the outstanding jazz band from Seattle, will perform jazz standards with their own special edge.
