Community Conversations will kick off its second season on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Hall Church with speaker Mayumi Tsutakawa.
Mayumi, daughter of renowned sculptor George Tsutakawa, will speak about her family’s 100-year history in Seattle and Executive Order 9066, which sent American residents born in Japan and their offspring – who were American citizens – to concentration camps for the duration of the war. Across the west coast, 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced from their homes without any due process.
This year is the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066. With talk of registering Americans based on their religious beliefs or country of birth, this conversation is very timely. The event is free. Refreshments and childcare will be provided.
This Community Conversations is sponsored by Humanities Washington and The Lopez Island Family Resource Center,LopezCommunity Land Trust, Leadership San Juan Islands and Transitions Lopez.
