Tai Chi on Lopez

Waldron Community Meeting
The Waldron community meeting is every 2nd Saturday of the month in the schoolhouse. The group meets at 2:30 p.m. in the winter, and 4 p.m. in spring and summer.
After school basketball
The Lopez Island Family Resource Center will be offering basketball for 3rd-5th graders. Learn basic basketball skills and have fun on the court shooting hoops and scrimmaging! Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00-4:15 beginning March 12. Cost is $20 for seven sessions. Some scholarships available. Pre-registration required. Crafts for the garden
Are you ready for gardening but the weather isn’t cooperating? Several presenters will show you ideas for things you can make for your garden as you wait for temperatures to rise. Thursday, March 13, at the Senior Center downstairs at the Lopez Fire Station. Coffee and conversation at 9:30, short business meeting at 10:00 followed by presenters. Everyone is welcome! Land Bank meeting
The San Juan County Land Bank Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday, March 14 in the Conference Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, Friday Harbor. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. A Public Hearing to consider Draft 2008 Amended Expenditure & Acquisition Plan is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Projects in the draft Plan include Doran property on San Juan Island. Public testimony will be heard. General public comment time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
How Partnerships have Saved Farms workshop
Kate Dean, of the Jefferson LandWorks Collaboration, will speak on “How Partnerships have Saved Farms and Farming on the Olympic Peninsula,” at the Lopez Grange on Friday, March 14 at 5:00 p.m. For information please call Tim Clark at 468-2010.
Love is Here to Stay
“Love is Here to Stay” on Sunday, March 16 is a free concert at Lopez Center at 4 p.m. Donations will benefit the Lopez Animal Protection Society. Tenor Stephen Oles and pianist Marjorie Stensrud will perform songs on the theme of love by Gershwin, Rogers and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Joni Mitchell and others. Guest vocalists will be Robert Herrmann, Ginni Keith and JoAnn Lange.
Responding to poetry workshop
Craft poems based on your personal responses to subjects of your choice (or subjects that choose you) by engaging with the poems of several master poets. Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m., March 18, 25, April 1 and 15 at the Orcas Library. Instructor: JoEllen Moldoff.
Women and Money workshop
A financial advisor from Smith Barney who specializes in empowering women to take control of their money is coming to Orcas on Wednesday, March 19, at the Outlook Inn Victorian Room. She will be giving two free presentations at 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. There will be time for a Q&A in addition to her presentation.
Yoga for Kids
The Lopez Island Family Resource Center will be offering a fun-filled, fast-paced yoga class for five- to eight-year-olds. Through poses, transform into animals, trees, and boats! Handstands, headstands, backbends and more. Five senses explored. Join Llewellyne Arden at Lopez School on Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 beginning March 20. Lopez Island chess tournament
A chess tournament will be held on Saturday, March 22, at the Lopez Island Library community room. This will be five rounds with no eliminations. All age/experience levels are welcome. Prizes and trophies will be awarded in several age groups. This event is free. Jazz and the Word
The San Juan Island Library is presenting Lady Bird: Jazz and the Word on March 22 from 5:15-6:30 p.m. in the Library, 1010 Guard St, Friday Harbor. Tangria will perform jazz and give a reading from the jazz novel, Lady Bird.
4H Easter Egg hunt on Lopez
4H Easter egg hunt on March 23, 2 p.m. SHARP in Odlin Park. For ages 0 to 5th grade. Hunt for eggs, and receive a prize for most eggs and for the golden egg (in each age category).
CWMA annual meeting
The annual meeting of the Catherine Washburn Memorial Association (CWMA) will be held Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at the Lopez Library. Reports will be provided and directors elected to three vacant positions as specified in the by-laws. The Board nominates Don Langrock, Wendy Mickle, and Cherill Perera. Members may nominate other candidates. Other nominees must be members of CWMA, permanent residents of Lopez Island, and have the written endorsement of 10 CWMA members. Nominations must be postmarked by March 26 and sent to CWMA, P.O. Box 309, Lopez Island, WA 98261.
Second Annual K-9 Carnival
Island Rec’s K-9 Carnival is back and only a month away! This year’s event will be held on Sunday, March 30 from 1-4 p.m. on San Juan Island. Dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages will have fun weaving through the maze for a treat or mastering the agility course. Your pooch can also show off their singing abilities in the Doggie Idol contest or strut their stuff during the costume contest. There will also be contests for best trick, best kisser, happiest dog and a peanut butter eating contest. So get those costumes together and start practicing those tricks so your pup can take home that first prize ribbon. Coming back to the island after their very popular show at last years Wags to Riches event, the Washington Owners of Flying Disk Dogs will be entertaining the crowd with two shows.
