The Lopez chess group be playing chess at the Lopez Library community room on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Sets and boards provided. Contact Jerry at 468-4709 for more information.

Evening meal at School

The next Evening Meal at Lopez School is on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. Everyone is invited, come any time. On the menu is: potato and leek soup, Lopez Italian sausage, sauteed greens with garlic, bulgur wheat pilaf, roasted winter vegetables, and carrot cake. Adults $5, children (12 and under) $1, families $15. Pay at the door.

MSA potluck/lecture

The Marine Science Associates Potluck/Lecture, co-sponsored by the Friday Harbor Laboratories and the San Juan Nature Institute, will be held in the Commons at the Friday Harbor Laboratories on Tuesday, March 4 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The following illustrated talk will be presented: Dr. Casimir Rice, NOAA Fisheries, Mukilteo Research Station, “The Forsaken Fjord: Science, Society, and Biological Decline in Puget Sound.” Please call 378-2165 or e-mail cowelk@u.washington.edu by Monday, March 3 to let them know if you plan to attend the potluck/lecture and to find out what is needed for the potluck. Baby-sitting Clinic

Orcas Rec is sponsoring a Baby-sitting Clinic for girls and boys for grades 6 and up on Saturday, March 8 from 10:00-4:00 in the Orcas Fire Hall Meeting Room. This class is being offered to supply the education needed to offer excellent child care as a babysitter for kids of all ages. Margie Sabine will provide the basics of babysitting presented by the Red Cross. Each participant will receive a babysitting certificate and be placed on a community babysitters list. Cost: $20. Space is limited to 18 kids. Call 376-5339 to register for the class.

Hoops after-school b-ball

Girls: March 6-April 3; boys: March 7-April 4. At the Orcas public school old gym. This after school program is open to children of all abilities. Boys are on Mondays/Fridays (grades 3 and 4 from 3:20-4:20), (grades 5 and 6, 4:30-5:30). Girls Tuesdays/Thursdays (grades 3 and 4, 3:20-4:20), (grades 5 and 6, 4:30-5:30). Lopez Elementary seniors’ lunch

Elementary school children, bring your grandparents, mentor, or special senior to lunch at the school on Wednesday, March 12! Kindergarteners will eat at 11:35 a.m. and 1st — 5th graders at 11:40 a.m. Lunch will cost $4. Joseph Green poetry workshop

Poet Joseph Green will read on April 18 and teach a workshop on April 19 in the Orcas Library. Joseph Green’s poems have appeared in literary magazines all over the United States, as well as in Ireland and Germany, and have been collected in several books. Workshop registration will begin on March 5 in the Orcas Library, and is open to all poets. The workshop is limited to 15 participants, on a first-come basis. Each poet will submit two poems by March 19 to be used by the poet for teaching purposes. For more information, check the library or call JoEllen Moldoff at 376-7680. The workshop fee is $50.
