Four years ago, the Board of the Lopez Farmers’ Market initiated a contest for local artists with a cash prize of $400. The ongoing contest has allowed local artists to submit their artistic views and visions of what they believe the market represents. The winning poster is used to promote the 2010 market season and also will be available for sale at the market. The funds from poster sales are used to support each year’s cash prize. This year, in addition to the regular contest, a separate contest will be held just for kids aged 12 and under, with a cash prize of $50.
The submitted posters are displayed in the Lopez Post Office for the entire month of March in the hopes that residents will view and vote on their favorites. The final vote rests with the membership of the Farmers’ Market at their annual meeting held in April 2010. The selection is based on the most popular 5 posters voted on by the Lopez community.
The first and third year recipient was Brenna Jael Nies, an artist who does pen and ink lettering and logo design, and also is well known for her fine hand painted signs that are visible throughout the village. The second year winner was Joel Bruce, artist and chief organizer of the recent Art Wall Project on the village green this past summer.
The Board of the Lopez Farmers’ Market would like to encourage the community to participate in this art project, not just by voting on the posters, but by submitting your artwork as well.
Guideline specifics for the contest will be posted on the boards and will be available at Paper Scissors on the Rock. For questions please contact Diana at 468-2599.
