The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
July 29
• An Orcas deputy and Orcas Island Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a death investigation.
• A deputy responded to a theft in Eastsound.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 43 mph in a posted 25 mph zone.
July 30
• A Lopez homeowner reported vandalism to his vehicles. A disgruntled tenant is likely responsible.
• A deputy on Orcas stopped the driver of a vehicle for traveling too fast in Moran State Park. The driver was issued a citation for speeding.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle with a defective brake light. The driver was issued a citation for not having insurance.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle because the driver did not have a driver’s license. The driver was issued a citation for not having a valid license with identification.
• Deputies responded to a report of a woman screaming near Eastsound. One person was arrested for driving under the influence.
• On three separate occasions deputies on San Juan responded to reports of trespassers. In each instance, the trespassers were issued notices.
• A Lopez resident reported trespassing and property damage by a former acquaintance. A report was completed, a trespass warning letter was issued and a no-contact order was applied for.
July 31
• A Lopez resident reported an obvious attempt to defraud her via a telephone call. The person did not sustain any financial loss.
• A Lopez resident reported the theft of a kitten. The suspect quickly returned the small cat in good condition after being contacted by a deputy.
• A minor boating incident was reported to a Lopez deputy. The parties were encouraged to find a civil solution.
• A floatplane had contact with a moored boat while docking on Lopez. The airplane charter company reported the incident to the proper aviation authorities and was working to compensate the boat owner.
• A deputy on Orcas issued a driver a citation for speeding 60 in a 40 mph zone near the ferry landing.
• A deputy on San Juan issued a driver a citation for exceeding the posted speed limit.
Aug. 1
• Deputies on Orcas responded to a citizen dispute. The involved parties were contacted and none of the involved parties wished to pursue charges.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a citizen dispute. One person was arrested for disorderly conduct and released with a citation.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 39 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone.
• A deputy was dispatched to an order violation in the Friday Harbor area, and contacted the victim.
• A Lopez deputy received a report that someone saw what they suspected was a cougar on the southend of the island along the beach on McArdle Bay on July 27. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife was notified to conduct further investigation.
• Graffiti was reported at the Skate Park in Lopez Village. Spray paint had been applied to utility boxes, trash cans and the skate structure itself. There is no suspect information or workable leads at this time.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a report of a collision between two vehicles. The driver of one of the vehicles was issued a citation for improperly backing up and for an instruction permit violation.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped a driver for driving on a suspended license. The driver was arrested for driving with a suspended license in the third degree and was issued a citation for having defective tires.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for driving 46 mph in a posted 25 mph speed zone.
• The driver of a vehicle was stopped and drug detection K9 Sucia alerted the deputy to the odor of narcotics. The vehicle was impounded, a search warrant was granted and controlled substances were located within the vehicle.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to yield at an intersection. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and was given a citation for failing to yield.
Aug. 2
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding and for driving left of the center lane. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and was issued a citation for driving left of center.
• A deputy responded to a citizen dispute in Eastsound. The parties were separated and a report was taken.
• Deputies responded to a rollover collision with injuries on San Juan. The driver was transported to Peace Island Medical Center and the roadway was cleared.
• Deputies were dispatched to an aircraft that crash-landed at the Orcas Island Airport. There were no injuries.
• A deputy received a call about a hit-and-run in Eastsound. The license plate of the suspect vehicle was obtained by a
witness and the wreck is under investigation.
• Orcas deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. The matter was found to be civil in nature.
Aug. 3
• A Lopez man shot and killed two dogs on his property that had just destroyed a flock of chickens in their henhouse. The dogs’ owner was cited by a deputy for the dogs killing livestock.
• A deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle in Eastsound for having an expired registration. The driver of the vehicle was issued traffic citations for having an expired registration, an expired driver’s license and for not having insurance.
• A deputy took a report of a stolen inflatable dinghy from a vessel moored in a private mooring facility on Orcas. The case is under investigation.
• A deputy was dispatched to a possible domestic incident in the Friday Harbor area. The reporting deputy arrived but did not locate any problems.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle with an expired registration. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a report of a loss/theft on Prohaska Road.
Aug. 4
• Deputies responded to a domestic incident at the Peace Island Medical Center emergency room involving a male with a knife. The man was arrested for domestic violence assault in the fourth degree and booked into jail.
