The Lopez Artist Guild has announced the recipient of the 2009 Shirley Wright Scholarship award of $1000. The Shirley Wright scholarship is granted in honor of Ms. Wright, who was one of Lopez Island’s premier artists and beloved art mentors. The scholarship is awarded to a Lopez Island graduating senior who will be continuing an art education after high school.

This year’s winner is Sebastian Lasbo for his work in film. He shows great promise as a filmmaker demonstrated by three documentaries he showed the scholarship committee. Lasbo will be attending Evergreen State College in the fall.

The Lopez Artist Guild also makes grants available to guild members for continuing art education, and for equipment and materials.

The money for scholarships and grants is raised by the Artist Guild at events such as the Art Auction and the 4th of July Art Fair. The Lopez Artist Guild also has raised and contributed money to numerous community projects such as the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts and the Lopez School art programs. Donations are always welcome.
