The Lopez Artist Guild has announced the winner of the 2008 Shirley Wright Scholarship award of $1000.
The scholarship is awarded to a Lopez Island student who will be continuing an art education after high school.
After careful consideration of scholarship applications and portfolio submissions by some very talented Lopez Island students, this year’s winner is Addison Rankin, who graduated from Spring Street School in Friday Harbor. Addison will be attending the Northwest College of Art in Portland.
A Shirley Wright Scholarship of $1000 was also awarded retroactively to Mali Fischer-Levine, who will be attending the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in British Columbia, Canada. Mali is a 2007 graduate of Lopez High School.
The Shirley Wright scholarship is granted in honor of Shirley Wright, who was one of Lopez Island’s premier artists and beloved art mentors. Also available is a $500 scholarship for outstanding art work done by a student over the course of their high school career. Monies for both scholarships are provided by the Lopez Artist Guild.
The Lopez Artist Guild also makes grants available to guild members twice a year for continuing art education and for equipment and materials.
The money for the scholarships and grants is raised by the Artist Guild at events such as the Art Auction and the 4th of July Art Fair. The Lopez Artist Guild also has raised and contributed money to numerous community projects such as Lopez Center for Community and the Arts and the Lopez School art programs. Donations are always welcome.
