Lopez Island School District was recently informed that all three of their high school fall 2008 athletic teams have been awarded prestigious recognition by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) for their academic achievements.

The 2008 Lopez Lobo Soccer Team, under the coaching of Richard Tetu, has been named the “WIAA Academic State Champions 2008,” having maintained the highest grade point average in their 1-B league. The average 3.677 grade point average reflects a district and team commitment to athletics and academics.

“Special recognition goes to Coach Richard Tetu for emphasizing the important balance of academics and athletics,” said Mike Colbrese, Executive Director for the WIAA in a recent communication to the district.

The 2008 Lopez Lobo football and volleyball teams were also each commended for their academic strength. Both the football and the volleyball teams received a “WIAA Distinguished Scholastic Award” for their 2008 seasons. The Lobos volleyball athletes maintained an average 3.485 grade point average and the Lobo football players maintained an average 3.071 grade point average this season.

“We are very pleased and proud of our student athletes and their coaches,” said Superintendent Bill Evans. “To be recognized in this manner by the WIAA is further validation of our efforts to promote quality education in Lopez School.”
