On June 4, American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day brings together outdoor enthusiasts across the country for the 19th annual celebration of America’s magnificent trail system, its countless supporters and volunteers. Two thousand events will take place around the country including trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running, trail celebrations and more. There are 42 events in Washington including one on Lopez.
Lopez Community Trails Network (LCTN) is celebrating National Trails Day on June 4 with Walk Your Rock. The event starts 10 a.m. at Odlin Park for a day of hiking and trail building on six public trails followed by a barbeque at 4 p.m. at Odlin Park.
Activities include hiking on six of the public trails of LCTN’s partners: Land Bank’s South Hummel Lake Trail and Lopez Hill, BLM’s Chadwick Hill, County Parks Odlin Park and Shark’s Reef, and Washington State Parks’ Spencer Spit.
The trails will be marked and hosted. Participants will receive a decal for each mile walked. These decals admit participants to the barbeque for food and hiking gear prizes. Prizes include National Trails Day t-shirts, a backpack, headlamp, stainless water bottle, backcountry emergency kit, and more.
At three of the locations you can view or participate in trail building or maintenance. Tools and supervision will be available at Chadwick, Lopez Hill and Odlin Park. Bring your own clippers if you have them. Decals are also awarded for time worked.
There are maps, directions and more at the LCTN’s table at the Saturday Farmer’s Market as well as at each trail. All trails will be staffed until 4 p.m. The event is open to everyone, please come and share these beautiful trails.
