Unique Tapestry of Contemporary Folk and World Music – Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen, each well known and loved for their decades of music making have joined musical forces in a new duo. Cindy is a superb singer, guitarist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Grey is one of America’s finest players of the Irish flute and tin whistle, as well as an accomplished singer and concertina, fiddle, piano and harmonium player. As composers each has contributed to the unique tapestry of contemporary folk and world music as it exists and flourishes in America today. Islands Sinfonia Benefit Concert

The Islands Sinfonia and Ginni Keith will present the first of a series of benefit concerts for the Lopez Family Options Program.

The program will feature works by Haydn, Mozart, Bach, and Williams. Desserts, hot beverages and good conversation will all be had after the concert.

The concert, held at the Lopez Island Community Center, is at 3:00 p.m. on Feb. 21. $15 donation at the door – much appreciated.

The regular monthly meeting of the San Juan Island Library Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday, February 10 at 6:00 PM.

Second Arthur Whiteley Lecture

Dr Eric Adelberger, Emeritus Professor of Physics at the UW, will be the speaker at the second Arthur Whiteley Lecture on Thursday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. in The Commons, at UW Friday Harbor Labs. His title is Testing Einstein’s “Happiest Idea” by watching things fall sideways!

Dr Adelberger will review the history of experimental tests of gravitational forces and will illustrate how profound ideas develop, how incorrect experimental conclusions can stimulate new insights, and how the best experimental techniques are sometimes the least obvious. All are welcome.

The local barbershop chorus, Island Chordsmen Plus, will serenade your special Valentine with roses and songs anywhere on San Juan Island. They will vocalize your love Friday, Feb. 13, with a quartet, or the entire chorus will sing to your sweetheart anytime Saturday, Feb 14. Last year 37 people felt the love for this special occasion. The Island Chordsmen Plus can schedule a time for your convenience. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the San Juan County Council has canceled the public hearing to consider an Ordinance of San Juan County, WA, amending the San Juan County Travel Policy. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in the Council Hearing Room at 55 Second Street, Friday Harbor, Washington, on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The public hearing has tentatively been rescheduled for March 3, 2009. The specific time and location will be published in a legal notice at least 10 days in advance of the meeting and will include a summary of the ordinance.
