The last Presidential debate is on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live at Lopez Center.

The San Juan County Democrats have sponsored live viewing of the debates, beginning at the end of September.

The Presidential debates are the first public service events in the Lopez community to use Internet live-streaming for viewing. Lopez Center upgraded its web speed earlier than planned, specifically for the debates.

Originally the viewing had been scheduled to be in the Lopez Library as a public service. But due to reports that there was a high interest and the possibility of more people than could fit in the library’s conference room, local Democrat officers decided to move the event to Lopez Center. The first Debate on Friday, Sept. 26 drew 140 people. The following two debates had 45-55 in attendance.

Lopez Library bridged technical needs by loaning their laptop with a compatible projector.

As with any new technology, a few unexpected snafus took up a few minutes to resolve. By the third night, Oct. 7, all was running very smoothly due to collaborative efforts.

Though there has been freedom to express reactions, a high level of respect and civil, cordial communication has been evident during all the viewings, regardless of political leanings.
