This Friday, Oct. 24, Woodmen Hall will once again be filled with families gathered together to carve their Halloween pumpkins.

Carved pumpkins will be brought onto the stage and lit, providing a golden glow for local story tellers to share their family friendly tales! After stories, the pumpkins can be taken home to light porches.

This Halloween tradition was started 19 years ago by Lopezians Liz Scranton and Terri Linneman, and is now an annual event hosted by the Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC). The event is open to everyone in the community. One hundred pumpkins will be available for carving starting at 6 p.m. Clean-up will start promptly at 7:30 p.m., so that there is time for stories before it gets too late for the little ones. Be sure and arrive as close to 6 p.m. as you can, as carving takes time.

Bring carving tools and a dessert to share. Pumpkins, beverages, and entertainment will be provided. Sponsors for the event include Sunset Builders, Blossom Organic Grocery, Horsedrawn Produce, Lopez Village Market, and the Lopez Transfer Station.

Admission is by a suggested donation of $4 per person or $10 per family. While this is more about “fun” than fundraising, any profits will go towards kids’ scholarships for the Lopez Island Family Resource Center’s Summer Workshops.
