What was in the attic, under the porch, or hanging on a nail? Treasures that tell the history of San Juan Island were gathered into a digital archive that will be on tour at the San Juan Island Library on Friday September 25 at 6:30 p.m. in a free event, open to the public. Library Director Laura Tretter and Museum Director Kevin Loftus will be your guides, showing you the items in the archive. The collection includes paintings, photos, and other documents such as a ferry ticket when fares were measured in hundredths of a dollar. Objects are also included: items like stone points left by Native Americans, Clyde Sundstrom’s dancing hat, and locally made pottery.
The collection is comprised of treasures that islanders cherish and chose to share with others through a project that allows them to be digitally photographed or scanned, cataloged, and a database of the information uploaded to the internet for all to access through the library’s website at www.sjlib.org.
When the public was invited to bring in objects to be scanned for the digital archive, some chose to donate them to the museum. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. through the end of this month, when winter hours begin.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.
