The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
June 23
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of vandalism at Friday Harbor Elementary School. Three juveniles were located and a report was sent to the prosecutor’s office and Juvenile Court Services.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a vehicle prowl in Friday Harbor. At this time, there are no leads and the incident was documented.
• A deputy in Friday Harbor was flagged down at Sunken Park regarding a tourist finding an empty purse in the park. The purse was empty and entered into the property and evidence room as found property.
• San Juan Deputies located a subject with a felony Department of Corrections warrant in Friday Harbor. He was booked into jail on the warrant.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a reported sex offense. The investigation is ongoing.
• A deputy stopped a driver after he saw him run a stop sign at the intersection of Hummel Lake Road and Fisherman Bay Road. The deputy issued the driver a citation for failing to come to a complete stop at the stop sign.
June 24
• San Juan deputies received a report of threats. No suspect information was available and the incident did not meet the threshold of a criminal act.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of found property. The owner was located and the property was returned.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an agency assist.
• San Juan deputies responded to a report of a collision with injury on West Valley Road. One person was transported to the hospital for treatment and the driver was issued a citation for driving with wheels off the roadway.
• A Lopez resident turned in a found dog. The owner was located a short time later.
• A deputy on San Juan Island received a CPS report of a possible domestic incident. The incident was unfounded when interviewed by CPS.
• A Lopez resident turned in a found debit card, which was later secured at the sheriff’s office.
• An Orcas deputy investigated vandalism to a residence and a vehicle. An apparent BB caused a small mark on the window of the victim’s residence and the windshield of his vehicle. There are no investigative leads.
• A deputy responded to a callback report of a lost passport, alien card, and social security card by a tourist to San Juan Island in February 2021.
• A deputy stopped a motorist in the Lopez Island Village for not wearing her seat belt. The deputy issued the driver a citation for failing to wear a seat belt.
• A deputy on San Juan Island stopped a vehicle for expired registration. The driver was issued an infraction for no valid operator’s license with identification.
June 25
• Deputies responded to a report of an unwanted person call in Friday Harbor involving an intoxicated male “breaking things” at a local business. One male was arrested for obstructing a law enforcement officer and booked into jail awaiting a first appearance hearing.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to a possible assault near Eastsound. The suspect was identified.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of a hit-and-run in Friday Harbor. The involved parties exchanged information.
• A deputy on Orcas responded to an unattended death. After an investigation was completed, it was found the cause was natural circumstances.
• An Orcas deputy took a report of harassment and protection order violation.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a report of an order violation. A crime does not appear to have been committed and the incident was documented.
• San Juan Sheriff’s Marine Unit deputies responded to a boat adrift and heading toward other vessels moored in Friday Harbor. Deputies and harbor staff were able to contact the unmanned vessel and safely dock it until the owner could be contacted.
• A Lopez resident turned in two air pistols to a deputy. The pistols were processed and stored for eventual destruction.
• A Lopez deputy used a sheriff’s boat to assist Lopez Island Fire and EMS personnel with moving an injured person who fell in the area of Iceberg Point. The person had fallen to a location along the shore that was only safely accessible from the sea. The victim was flown to a hospital via Life Flight.
• An Orcas deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding in Moran State Park. The driver was issued a citation for speeding 37 mph in a 25 mph zone and for having no valid proof of insurance.
• A Lopez deputy responded to a domestic dispute call. The incident was non-criminal, and an • An Orcas issued a driver a citation for speeding for 57 mph in a 35 mph zone of Orcas Road.
• A deputy on San Juan issued a driver a citation for driving 40 mph in a 25 mph speed zone of Tucker Avenue.
June 26
• Orcas deputies investigated a call of gunshots in Moran State Park. An investigation was conducted and a subject was arrested for aiming or discharging a firearm.
• A deputy was dispatched to a single-vehicle wreck in the Friday Harbor area. A vehicle had a mechanical issue when parking and struck a building.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a report of a burglary in progress. It was reported a person was heard inside her residence while she was sleeping in the bedroom. An extensive check of the residence and surrounding property was completed. No persons were found.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a citizen dispute.
• A San Juan deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 51 mph in a 35 mph speed zone. Multiple warnings were also given.
• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for speed. The driver was issued a citation for operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
• A deputy on San Juan Island responded to a parking complaint on Eagle Cove Drive. The deputy located multiple vehicles parked in the roadway blocking. Several vehicles were issued parking citations.
• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a person riding a dirt bike for speeding 50 mph in a 35 mph zone of Ferry Road at the Ferry Terminal. The driver was ticketed for speeding, for not having a motorcycle endorsement, and for operating an off-road vehicle on the road.
• A Lopez deputy stopped a speeding vehicle near the village. The driver was given a warning for speed and issued a citation for failure to wear a safety belt.
• A Lopez Deputy issued a driver a citation for speeding 42 mph in a 25 mph zone on Fisherman Bay Road.
June 27
• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding 41mph in the 25 mph zone near the village. The driver was found to have a suspended driver’s license and was required to have an ignition interlock device installed in any car he drove. A report was referred to the prosecuting attorney’s office.
• An unwanted person was asked to leave a Lopez business. The subject complied and no further action was necessary.
• A Lopez deputy contacted a driver who cut into a gap in the ferry line. The driver admitted doing so, and was moved to the end of the line and warned for line cutting.
• Orcas deputies assisted a boat adrift near Henry Island. The boater was contacted and later assisted by Vessel Assist.
• San Juan deputies responded to a citizen dispute. An investigation determined no crime had taken place, and the responding deputies mediated an acceptable resolution to the conflict.
• A Lopez deputy was called when a dog was caught trying to find a way into a chicken coop. No chickens were harmed. The dog was returned to the owner with a warning letter issued for the dog running at large.
June 28
• A Lopez deputy was sent to check on a traffic hazard. The hazard was referred to Public Works for mitigation.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a citizen assist in the Frida Harbor area. The deputy contacted the person involved. The person wished to provide a statement on a possible order violation.
• A Lopez deputy was sent to a citizen dispute at Hummel Lake. The report was unfounded.
• A Lopez resident reported a fraud incident.
• Orcas deputies responded to a medical aid call with a person not breathing. EMS pronounced the person deceased. An investigation was conducted. No suspicious circumstances were found. The victim appeared to die of natural causes.
• A Lopez deputy was contacted regarding a civil issue between two roommates. The landlord will take care of the situation.
• A Lopez deputy checked an open residence with a property caretaker.
• A Lopez deputy addressed a traffic hazard related to a parked boat and trailer.
• A Lopez deputy was called for suspicious noise coming from the water near the entrance to Fisherman Bay in the late-night hours. Nothing was located and no boating emergencies were reported.
• A San Juan deputy was dispatched to a report of found property in the Friday Harbor area. A cell phone was turned in at the Sheriff’s Office. Cell phone entered into evidence.
June 29
• A San Juan deputy responded to a community member who wanted to turn over an old box of ammunition to the Sheriff’s Office. The box of ammunition was entered into the evidence and property room for disposal.
• An Orcas deputy was dispatched to a welfare check involving a person with dementia. The welfare check was completed and a report was written.
• A deputy was dispatched to an agency assist on San Juan. The deputy checked the provided address but the person was not there.
• A Lopez deputy was called about a dog running at large and was able to quickly reunite the dog with its family. No further action was necessary.
• A deputy located and arrested a local resident with an active warrant issued out of San Juan County District Court. The man was booked into jail awaiting a next-day hearing.
• A Lopez deputy was called regarding a violation of a domestic violence no-contact order.
• An Orcas deputy took a report of a possible vandalism incident that occurred on Obstruction Island.
• A deputy on San Juan Island stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a citation for no valid operator’s license with identification.
• A San Juan deputy took a report of unwanted contact from an out-of-state subject who was emailing an island resident despite her wishes to the contrary.
• A deputy on San Juan Island responded to a report of fraud. The incident was documented and the reporting party was advised of more resources that may be able to further assist.
• A Lopez deputy provided a courtesy transport to a citizen who was stranded at the ferry terminal late at night due to car complications.
