The Lopez Island Library was pleased to bring Washington State Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken to the Lopez Island Elementary school to work with second through fifth graders on poetry exercises. Flenniken is the state’s poet laureate for 2012 – 2014.

The second graders in Connie Holtz’s literacy class new what a poet laureate was, and were prepared to give Flenniken their “best attention.”

Students had questions like, “How long have you been a poet?” and “Did you write the Dr Seuss books?” Students wrote a “patchwork pet” poem where they created an imaginary pet with words.

Flenniken’s latest book is “Plume.”
