The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.
June 14
• A Lopez deputy responded when an early morning commuter headed to the ferry swerved when a deer jumped in front of them. Their vehicle went into a ditch. No damage was done to the vehicle, the ditch, or the deer; however, the driver did miss their ferry.
• An investigation is ongoing after a deputy responded to a theft call in Eastsound.
• A deputy on Orcas was dispatched to a report of a single-vehicle accident. The vehicle’s inhabitants appeared to be unharmed and the vehicle was towed away.
• A Lopez deputy responded when an individual drove onto a neighbor’s property to check on the neighbor’s dogs. Moving forward, they agreed to call the neighbor’s phone instead of entering their property for dog inquiries.
• A San Juan deputy took custody of a loose Staffordshire Terrier known to deputies as a frequent dog-at-large. The dog was returned to the owner, who received a citation for a dog-at-large-3rd or subsequent violation.
• A San Juan deputy radioed that he was attempting to catch up to a vehicle that was driving recklessly. Another deputy located the vehicle and performed a traffic stop, arresting the driver for DUI and reckless driving. It is estimated that the vehicle was traveling at over 100 mph.
June 15
• A San Juan deputy took a report of a hit-and-run collision. The reporting party said that someone struck their driver’s side mirror and caused a significant scratch to their fender. No note was left at the scene and no suspect information is available.
• A report of a possible forgery on San Juan is being investigated.
• Orcas deputies made contact with a person in the library who had a warrant out of Illinois. The person was contacted and taken into custody without incident and is now awaiting extradition.
• A deputy took a report of a missing road sign to a private drive on San Juan. The drive is accessed off a county road, therefore the sign is owned by the county, and public works was notified.
• A deputy on San Juan received a report of a kayaker who was in the water. The kayaker, who was retrieved with assistance from San Juan Fire, suffered minor injuries.
• On San Juan, a deputy received a report of a found license plate. The owner was not located so the license plate was booked into evidence as found property.
June 16
• A Lopez resident reported a fraud attempt involving a caller claiming to be from Banner Bank.
• On San Juan, a deputy was contacted in reference to an unattended hit-and-run. The person reported their vehicle had been damaged in the past two weeks. There is no suspect information or evidence at this time.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver was issued a citation for expired registration over two months and a verbal warning for failing to stop at a stop sign.
• A deputy received a report of an erratic driver on Orcas. The vehicle was located and, after a traffic stop was conducted, probable cause was established to believe the driver was impaired. The driver was then arrested, processed, and booked into San Juan County Jail.
June 17
• A deputy responded to a report of a parking violation on San Juan. The vehicle was located in a disabled parking space with no placard displayed, and the driver was issued a parking citation for the violation.
• A San Juan deputy stopped the driver of a vehicle for speeding. The driver was issued a criminal citation for driving with a suspended license, a traffic citation for speeding 62 mph in a 45 mph zone, and warnings for expired proof of insurance, expired registration, and defective brake lights.
• A deputy on San Juan was dispatched to a report of a possible domestic incident. All parties had separated on their own and, after an investigation, it was found that no assault had occurred.
June 18
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of an unwanted person. The person was asked to leave and in the process destroyed the resident’s property.
• A Lopez citizen called for a deputy to check on a man wandering aimlessly on Ferry Road. The deputy contacted the person and learned he was a recently released parolee sponsored by local church members. A records check was performed, and a report was written.
• On San Juan, a deputy responded to an issue of an unruly passenger on the ferry. The passenger refused to leave the ferry and was arrested for criminal trespassing, taken into custody and booked.
• A Lopez resident reported a minor collision that occurred on private property. Deputies completed a courtesy report.
• For a second time, Lopez deputies were dispatched to a report of a suspicious-acting man. No crime had occurred. Deputies located a shopping bag the man had misplaced and directed him to his home.
• A deputy on Orcas took a noise complaint callback. The reporting party was advised that the Sheriff’s Office was looking into a resolution as no crime had been committed.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to a trespassing complaint and issued trespass warning letters issued to the individuals.
• A deputy on San Juan served a court order via e-mail as permitted by the court.
• A deputy stopped a driver on San Juan for driving with a suspended license. The driver was issued a citation for driving with a license suspended-3rd degree and a citation for not having valid insurance.
• A Lopez deputy was dispatched to an unwanted person call in the village. The reporting party advised that a man came onto his property and asked for a ride. The individual seemed agitated.
• A deputy on San Juan responded to a report of vandalism. The reporting party stated an individual they knew had left destroyed flowers on their front porch and possibly dented their front door.
June 19
• Deputies responded to a report of a domestic incident in Friday Harbor. After an investigation, the deputy determined the incident was non-physical, and instead an individual acting out because they were not able to get to their therapist.
• A San Juan deputy responded to a civil issue. After arriving, it was discovered a person was inside an apartment and refused to leave. She later destroyed some items inside the apartment and was arrested for malicious mischief -3rd-degree and 2nd-degree criminal trespassing.
• An Orcas deputy responded to a call about a civil dispute. An investigation was conducted and it was determined no crime was committed.
• A deputy on San Juan stopped the driver of a vehicle and issued them a citation for speeding, 61 mph in a 45 mph zone, and for not having insurance.
• Deputies on San Juan were dispatched to report of a hit-and-run accident. The investigation is ongoing.
June 20
• An Orcas deputy responded to a medical emergency call to assist Orcas Island Fire/EMS.
• San Juan County deputies were dispatched to a death investigation on Blakely Island. Evan’s Funeral Home was contacted.
• A Lopez deputy was contacted at the station by a citizen regarding the theft of property.
• A deputy was assigned to a report of found black leather gloves in Friday Harbor. The gloves were placed into evidence as found property.
